90 drive axles popping out, replaced both of them, tried different set as well, anyone help?
Hello,
I just replaced the drive axles on my sisters car (1990 anniversary edition accord, automatic). They worked fine for about three days and then car stopped moving and the trans made grinding type noises. Didnt know what the problem would be, thought it was the trans. I have a friend who owns a transmission shop , so I towed it over to him. He told me the axle probably popped out because I didnt have it far enough in. I told him I was pretty sure that they were in as far as I could get them. So I jacked it up and tried getting them in further with no luck. I asked him if he would then look at it. He could not get them in any further, so he took them out and got a different set from autozone(thats where the first set were from), they were different part numbers, and he said he could not get them to stay in the trans. He told me he wasnt sure what to do next. So here I am, seeing if anyone out here has ideas. I have had a 84, 85 and a 90 prelude and have changed the axles in all of them and never had a problem. The motor and trans were replaced and have about 110,000 miles on them. Car has about 210,000 miles on it. He said the strut towers were not moving and the other joints had no play. Motor mounts seemed good as well. Im pretty sure I replaced one or two motor mounts when I did the head gasket a year and half ago. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Was the clip installed and in good condition? Are the splines damaged? Correct axles?
Another thing I've seen with aftermarket axles are that they tend to not fit correctly. I've worked on car from another Honda dealer and found that they axle they installed a few months ago was too long and caused the joint to bind up.
Had a similar problem with a 86 accord i swaped motors in.On the passenger side when i turned the axle it would push the whole motor over.I pulled the axle and turned it to the next bearing and reassembled, still pushed motor.Pulled axle again and turned to next bearing and no more pushing motor over.Don't know why but it was like it was out of time?.Might try doing this to see if it will help.
