Gas brand preference, and does it matter?
What brand of gas do you use? Octane rating?
----------
Also, does it matter to you at all, or do you settle for the cheapest gas? Please explain... would love to hear people's opinion and experiences.
I use Shell V-Power (Octane 93 as required) all the time on the Prelude, 335i, and A4. For the SUV, I just use the Krogers/Randall's gas (Octane 89 as required)

I've been pumping chevron for 3years 91 octane. I tried Arco gas when i first got my car. Didn't notice the difference but less gas mileage. This was on a h23 92 lude. btw the arco gas did have ethanol in it.
I now drive a 99 sh. For some reason i feel like i get less miles.
This might not be related but i tried 89 octane at arco and my car stalled on idle.. for the 92lude

i use shell 93 v power, think about it, if race cars and F1 cars use it to get the best performance then i am too.
sheetz and exxon mobil are cheap but i've blown up a motor on they'r pump gas and cant trust it, it ruined my valves.

Friends did a test on a Motorcycle and Citgo 93oct beat Shell, Mobil, BP as far as power. It was a 3rwhp difference on a ~180whp GSX-R1000. Conditions set by Pros in a controlled environment.
I use Citgo whenever I can...
Personally I have always wanted to do some gas testing on Preludes. Considering they run on 100oct in Japan, I bet the 93oct in my JDM H22A is costing me some power/economy. Maybe we'll see one day.

You definately don't want to do this. Preludes require 92 or 93, not 91. Especially not 89.

Some states don't have 92/93. In Cali, 91 is premium. In PA you can get 94 at the pump.
I was told that in Japan, gas stations sell 95-97-100.....

91 is premium and 93 is super premium in texas. My H22a doesn't seem to care either way.

I am under the impression that if you are running a stock motor with feedback control from the knock sensor that you can pretty much use any octane rated gas. The controller in the ECU will retard the timing if the knock sensor indicates there is detonation occurring. When the ignition timing is retarded the motor will make less power and run less efficiently. Therefore, running premium gas should produce the maximum hp and fuel economy from the engine and this is why Honda recommends the type of fuel it does. Running a lower grade fuel shouldn't hurt the motor it just won't be making as much power or getting as many mpg.
the 4th and 5th gen preludes do not "require" 92+ octane. They only need 91 octane to run at peak performance with your basic bolt ons. The only time you would need higher octane is if you have FI or have significantly changed the engine. Theres a HUGE thread about this, you should SEARCH before asking these kinds of questions
as for brand of gas, I prefer Chevron or Texaco (they both use the same now). The reason is that I've never gotten a bad tank of gas from them, I have gotten some bad gas from a few other brands.

i've been pumping 92oct @ chevron w/ the assumption that they were better. i've never put shell's gas in my car. anyone want to enlighten me as to why they're better? except for the extra octane rating of course.
This all sounds really ridiculous to me. So people here is getting a very noticeable difference in power using Shell V-Power. I think its the "V-Power" name and price thats making you think you're getting major gains. I just go up to Smiths gas station and 91. I save like 15 cents a gallon cuz i shop at smiths. ****, if the quality of gas is that important stop by at ur local airport and get 100LL.

The best I had with Chevron was 290 miles on a full tank. The one try disappointed me, and I never have gone back. The 'Techron' stuff is BS. Stick to what most of us use... Shell V-Power. Hopefully you'll see numbers like most of us... over 325miles full tank.
