Default piston slap...

is this common in the sir2 b16a? on cold starts my engine sounds like all hell for like a half second then it goes away. i talked to to a local honda mechanic and he said he has seen quite a few b16's with this but never really caused a problem.

just kinda wanted to know. thanks for the help

My b16a3 (del sol vtec) does the same thing on startup... I've never worried about it too much since it goes away so quickly.

It's a condition that is normally encountered with aftermarket low-silicon alloy pistons, where the piston is fitted more loosely in the cylinder to allow for expansion as it heats up. Therefore when cold, the piston actually rocks slightly in the bore, causing a noise.

Sohctodohc, out of curiosity, what kind of oil do you run?

i switch between mobile 5w-30 and 10w-30. and i thought i was burning some oil this last change so i used 10w-40. but it turns out that it wasnt oil smoke it was fuel smoke at high rpms cause my ignitor was going bad.

Well, as the weather turns cooler, the heavier 10W-40 may take some additional time to circulate. I'd at least suggest switching back to a decent 5W-30 before winter.

ya i am going back to 5w-30 next oil change bt i still had this issue with that. the motor has never been torn apart. so i dont know what the issue is.

whats weird is i bought it off hmotors online. did a compression test with 3 different testers and it read 240 across the board. after looking around 240 is pretty high for a 10.4 to 1 compression motor. but looking through the sparkplug hole from what i could see the piston looked to be the stock p30 piston. to me thats kinda weird but i dunno.

If it's making good compression and isn't exhibiting any other issues, I wouldn't be concerned. Just continue to keep it properly maintained.

another thing is every now and then and its not constant or at any certain rpm i hear a tapping from the head. the valve lash has been set numerous times.

and its not constant but when it does it it sounds like 3 or 4 taps and then goes away and the same thing again next time it happens you ever heard of this??? im good at diagnosing **** and im so clueless on this one. the only other thing i think it could be is the lma's but i think it would be constant if there was a problem. thanks for the help by the way

when your engine is running and you close the vacuum line from the IM to the pcv that click is what it sounds like 3 or 4 times in a row. but i have replaced both the line and the pcv. and this weekend im deleting the whole pcv system with a catch can setup.

Honda top ends will never be completely silent no matter what you do. Unless you adjust the valve lash to tight, but then you'll have other problems.

I'm pretty sure (I don't personaly own one) that the B16 will alway be louder than the Z6. (which I do have)

i dont see why that would be. if they are both in the same condition wear and tear wise. whats the difference about them? the only difference i can think of is the b16a has the lost motion assembly.(im not sure if the d16 does or not) thats the only difference i can think there would be

got to thinking about it. and i have the p30 hooked up and the knock sensor wired. so if it was tapping hard or loud enough wouldnt the knock sensor pick it up and retard the timing like a bitch
