EDIT: This IS an EF, it's an '89 Civic SI with a '98 EK front-end conversion.

I've been told "bent connecting rod" - true?

It's an '89 Civic SI, I have a '98 front-end conversion, sorry. haha

I took the timing belt cover off just before starting it, so I can see if it behaved weirdly.

did you start the car after it was already running? it sounds like you ground some teeth off the flywheel.

i guess you could take out the starter or the lower flywheel cover and try to inspect it.

when you suspect something is wrong, stop trying to start it. sometimes you can catch the problem before it gets too bad.

Is it an easy task to take the starter off? or the lower flywheel cover?

I'd hate to have to resort to taking the oil pan off just yet.

what are you talking about? just yet? its SO EASY and all you need is a $10 gasket, a 14mm wrench, 12 mm wrench, 10mm deep socket, and extension. you dont even need to take your starter off...

much better than removing the head gasket, buying new head bolts and a new head gasket.

have you done a compression test? leak down test? checked your spark plugs? getting enough fuel? do you even have gas in your car? what is your timing set to? god damn it

........or if you dont know much about cars tow it to a shop

Would removing the oil pan allow me to tell if it's the flywheel? if it's a bent connecting rod?

What exactly can removing the oil pan tell me?

The point of a place like this is to get help from other members, to eliminate the need for a shop.

If you don't want to help, you could just stay out of the thread? maybe?

It was started once, the loud screech at the end was something the car made on it's own, it wasn't being attempted to start again. :/

Pull the starter out put it in gear push the car forward while looking at the flywheel and see if there are teeth missing off of it. you will need somebody to help push of course. did it just start doing this or has it been starting weird for a while?

One day I was coasting in neutral and the engine just jerked and stopped. I don't exactly remember if I was in neutral or if I was in 1st gear with the clutch in.

does not really sound like a flywheel problem to me. have you checked the timing belt it might have jumped time.

That's what a friend of mine suggested, I took the timing belt cover off and everything looked fine... Even for the few seconds it was running it rotated fine.

Are there any other simple things that could be wrong? Like the guy before mentioned spark plugs and what not?

so fire the friggan motor up a thousand times and turn a minor problem into a major issue.
