Does anyones transmission whine at low speeds in first through fourth gear? Maybe Im hearing something that is normal or could somthing really be wrong? It sounds like its whistling... Does anyone else experience this? I thought it might have been due to the close gear ratios in first through fifth any ideas???

Its a whine, something mechanical it gets louder and you go faster, almost like the whine of a supercharger just quieter, its annoying as hell...

I've heard this too...I kinda like it...it's like having a turbo (or SC) under the hood. I just thought it was the engine. Why do "all good trannies make this sound"?

Doubtful, my trans had made that noise since the day I bought the car, and a mis shift grids the syncros its not usual to actually grind down the gear...
It's just the sound of the gears meshing, we all have it.
Drive gears are cut at an angle to reduce noise but theres always going to be some.
For example, when you're in reverse that is the sounds of the gears meshing, the only difference is that reverse gears are cut strait: | instead of at an angle /
There is no such thing as a perfectly quiet manual tranny.
Edit- Also I doubt you got the whine from grinding gears, you're just more paranoid now. This is because when you shift gears you're locking in the "dog teeth" of the gear hub. This means when you grind you're grinding them, they are LOCKED in place they don't MESH like the actual gears do.
If you blew up a bearing and threw metal through the entire tranny and scored up the actual gears, then you'd have a louder whine. Grinding gears shouldn't make a whining condition.
