That's a "wives tale". The glass is likely only 10-15% of the hatch weight. Quarter windows weigh about 7 pounds. Door glass weighs in at 7.5 pounds of the original 70 pounds the door weighs. I don't know where it started, but people have a MAJOR misconception of the weight of the glass in these cars.

Will it help to lighten the car with lexan windows? Yep! Is it gonna drop hundreds of pounds? Nope. The glass isn't all that heavy, compared to the doors and the hatch. Pull a quarter window and weigh it. Cool how light they actually are.

Overall, glass weighs very little. Are you concerned with locking the car? If not, and you're on a budget, gut the hatch, remove the wiper and assembly. Also you can remove the hatch struts and remote latch mechanism and replace it with pins or exterior mechanical latches. IMO, most of the weight is in the doors. If cost isn't a concern, go with a carbon fibre hatch. Glass vs polycarbonate for the window? Debatable.

just look around for a carbon fiber hatch, there are a number of sellers. if i were to guess though you would be losing more wait replacing your hood though.

gut it and use a angle grinder to cut out the door pannels. not all of it though, you wanna keep the opener on there. you dont need to replace the hatch unless you going all out race and need that exta 100th of a second
