exhaust
Hello all. The center exhaust pipe on my 97 accord lx is on it's last leg. Exhaust systems are the only repair I haven't done, and I would've paid to have it done except the local shops in my area want around $500 to replace this thing which I think is ridiculous especially since I can get it from the local parts store for $110. Anyway, since everything is rusted pretty bad except for the 6 month old muffler, I was going to detach the system from the down pipe at the motor and drop it out of the car to make life a lot easier since the bolts are beyond penetrating oil and at the drill out stage now. The only thing I'm not sure about are the gaskets. My manuals don't have any diagrams. I'll need the gasket for the down pipe and the short pipe connection before the cat. The cat and center pipe connection and the muffler and center pipe. I know there not all the same but what are they technically called so I get the right ones?? thanks

The cat is fine. The pipe I'm refering to is the what I've seen refered to as the B pipe. It's from the cat to the muffler and has a flex tube and baffle on it. Actually, when I got the first estimate from a shop, I thought that included a new cat but it didn't. I doesn't need one.
You can go to AutoZone or AdavancedAuto and ask about the gaskets for the exhaust for whatever yr car you have and they will give you a list with the part number and price. I replaced a few of mine when I put my test pipe on my Accord a couple summers ago. Doesnt cost that much. They will even give you a diagram of which gasket goes where, so you can show them which one you're looking for.
From what I understood, he was just looking for the gaskets and the center pipe. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by YeuEmMaiMai »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">you can install a new exhaust yourself cost you about $250 for all the parts you will need</TD></TR></TABLE> That works too, and it will keep you WAY under the $500 the shop quoted you for.

thanks guys. Got the gaskets. I found a diagram with part numbers. I ran into another issue. The three flange bolts that connect the cat to the rear pipe are rusted real bad. I got one nut off with heat and another snapped. On the cat side the bolt heads are the oval shaped type. Are they threaded into the converter flange because they won't push out? thanks
They really don't make it easy with welded converter flange bolts if one happens to break. I got the other nut off and drilled the broken stud. Everything ready to go and the parts store ordered the wrong resonator assembly. They got one for a wagon instead of coupe. I'm gonna order it online instead. I'm thinking of getting a Maremont but according to their website the assembly is 70 1/4" long. My old one is 67". It could be a misprint. Bosal is another choice but the flex pipe is behind the resonator instead of in front. Not sure if that makes any difference though. Anyone order these brands before and how did they fit for OE replacement? thanks
