Default 2008 Honda Accord I4 4-Cylinder Questions

Hello,

I've been out of the scene for awhile.

Does anyone know what are the differences between the LX and the EX engines?

One is 177HP and the other is 190HP. Are they both K24 Engines?

Anyone know what contributes to the HP increase? (more aggressive cams? just a different ECU, etc.)

CP

Good question, even the honda technicians don't know exactly. They are both k24's the 190hp is a k24z3 the 177 hp is a k24z2. The bore/stroke is identical, the compression ratio is identical, visually I can't see a difference in the intake manifold/throttle body, or the exhaust exit from the back of the head. So, from my standpoint the only thing that leaves is ECU and cam profile... I'm leaning towards that especially since peak hp comes in at 6.5k on the 177 motor and 7k on the 190 motor, and the 190 motor only has 1 lb/ft additional torque. Sounds like a cam swap to me and I would think in a modern car a new tune would come along with it. I suppose I could have the parts counter pull up cam and ecu part numbers for both, gives me something to do at work tomorrow

oh, have you seen the exhaust manifold, or lack there of on these engines?? exhaust is ducted 4-1 in the head casting and theres one pipe that exits off the back of the head. Just like they've been doing with their v6's for awhile.

Thanks! Just wondering, because if the difference is just an ECU, I might as well just get the LX, save some money, and maybe find a way to just reflash it later.

If it's the cams as well, then that's difference, because it's a daily driver, I would have no intentions of tearing off the valve cover.

If the EX has more horsepower, how is it’s mileage estimate the same as for the LX? (22/31 for manual transmission, 21/31 for automatic)

Anyway, the main differences between the EX and LX that I see from the brochure are the moonroof, larger wheels (17” vs 16”), a security system, an upgraded stereo, and power driver’s seat. The price difference is right at $3,000.

Its worth the bump in price, the Lx and lxp come with a lot of nice stuff for 08 but the Ex is still worth splurging for. Have to have the Ex to get active noise cancelation too...

Had some free time at work and looked up some part numbers... turns out the lx, lxp and ex all use the same camshafts for intake and exhaust. The ecu's are a funny thing, there are three different ecu's for lx automatics and three different ecu's for ex automatics. They are all dependent on VIN number. All the ECU's I looked up for 08 accords were noted as "RE-WRITEABLE". If I get some more free time I will dig deeper and see if the intake manifold and throttle body are the same part numbers. Right now though, its looking like its just a different ecu flash but thats not to say it will be an easy thing to just plug in and play around with since they are different depending on VIN

if I am not mistaken the Lowest accord I4 does not have any form of variable valve timing.

all the accord 4 cylinders have been i-vtec since 2003... Im not even sure if they offered a non-vtec from 98-02, anyways yes all the 08's are 2.4 i-vtec

The DX was not VTEC in '99, and I assume '98.

Not even on the intake?

I'm thinking about the USDM Civic market a while back, where the K20A3 (160HP) had i-VTEC on the intake and the K20A2 (190 HP) had i-VTEC on both cams.

the EX computers are different and the rocker arms on the EX have a different ratio allowing for more lift and are lighter weight, also the exaust system on the EX have mufflers with bypass valves in them.

hi

Are you sure on that, I looked here and compared part# of LX vers EX, looks like the values and value springs are different.

https://www.hondapartsdeals.co...E++12

https://www.hondapartsdeals.co...E++12

Note the cal KL does have different intake rocker arm according to this online part cat.

EDIT: the above was 4dr LX vers 2dr EX, but the 4dr EX does match 4dr LX values and springs, that seems weird that 2dr be different.

your right on muffler different part# there and shields.
I guess its also possible there errors in there since its so new.

The added 13hp between the Lx and Ex is the difference between the lighter rocker arms and dual stage exhaust muffler.

where did u guys see that the LX has a 177 hp engine?? I just went on the honda website and it just shows the LX-S and it shows that it comes standard w/ the 190 hp engine. This is for the coupes by the way.

because your looking at the coupe which comes with 190hp, where the sedan LX comes with 177.
They both have roughly same torque.

Interesting stuff. I'm surprised they bother with some of these subtle differences.

yes, you do have to think is it all worth it as far as from a manufacturing point, all these parts and its not really big increase.
I guess they wanted the coupe and EX to be more sportier than base LX. Also changed on AT are 2-4 gear ratios are tighter on 190hp versions, not a lot but a change.
I am guessing the biggest thing is the exhaust and they raise rev limiter few 100's.

PS to post that say rocker arms, That's not showing a different part# on 177>190.
there is different part# on KA vers KL, calif models have VTEC on exhaust delaying 1 value at low RPM (probably emissions PZEV )
