Default Stock headlamp with hid (toyota, Lexus) Reflector lamp

the other day. i was looking at this toyota prius with hid and a lexus is300 with stock headlamp(reflector). they look pretty good. i dont know how they do it to make it look good. does anyone know. do they use a shield or a special hid bulb

The reflector and shield around the D2R bulb (used in reflector housings, D2S is used in projectors) are made specifically to send the xenon light where it's supposed to go.

They're still not as good or as efficient as projectors, though. You can't get the "flicker" effect w/ intense blue at the cutoff like you can with HID projectors.

It would also be much more difficult to do a retrofit, as you would need the entire reflector assembly to focus the light properly, which may or may not fit inside your headlight housing. Even if it did fit, it probably wouldn't be the right shape inside your headlight housing and would look retarded.

Projectors are best because they're pretty much self-contained units.
