Default The best experience i've ever had so far with my ITR.. and an STi!!

Okay so here begins the story of a young 19 year old boy, who knows nothing about driving and hasn't dared to explore the handling limits of his car.

Funny thing is, my best experience was having the car driven by somebody else!

The friend of a parent.. is quite the car nut. He owns a MY00 WRX STi that has been modified to produce over 400kilowatts of power, despite that, he says most of the attention he's put into is the suspension setup.

He takes it around tracks and hillclimbs as such around New South Wales, this is his track car. He also used to own an old black Porsche (don't ask me what, i don't get his jargon sometimes) and he bought his wife an IS300... nuff said for a VERY rich middle aged man. And his house.. bloody hell it's magnificant. I think he owns 5 cars in total (lots of daily drivers, 4wd's etc.. i was focused on his WRX)

So today i finally managed to catch him while he wasn't busy.. for once.

We had half an hour and i took him for a spin.. he was very impressed with the suspension, the brakes, the chassis and the seats. He loved the revving nature of the engine.

While pickin lunch up in a McDonalds drive thru he told me to "get out" and we switched places.

My lord... does he drive fast.

It's not how fast he drives in the straights, it's how fast he drives through the bloody corners!!!!!

The car is absolutely amazing, it's like he brought the car into life today. I lost grip with the two front wheels at a familiar corner awhile back (very very minor though) and he did twice the speed that i did without losing anything. He wasn't redlining in the straights, anyone can do that, he just wanted to show me how to turn the thing!

As for the seats, they've always been so tight for me (i have a small **** too) but today i was praising them for the amount of holding they gave me. The seats came alive as well and i felt them hold me like never before. Basically because my car NEVER goes that fast around a corner.

He was following a particular route among the back streets, i could tell he was familiar with these roads, he must do it in his WRX all the time. And as he drove, he was explaining things to me as we went along. At the same time he was so impressed with how trackable this car would be.. in it's bone stock form. He's read alot about them, but never driven one.

He took me back to his house, and parked in the array of cars on his front drive way. Of course the two cars that were taking up the garage was the WRX STi and the Lexus IS300. Tyres were stacked up everywhere..

Obviously i was interested the most in the STi. He unlocked the car, let me in, pushed afew buttons and he told me to start his car..

I could feel the exhaust note coming from behind me when the engine started. He had an Apexi computer thingymagig that he used soley for bypassing the factory set speed limiter.. or something.. (i was alittle lost in his speaking)

So there we were.. sitting in the STi with me in the drivers seat and him in the passengers, he allowed me to rev it alittle. I noticed how much bashing the car would've gone through, it was certainly showing it's age. And the tyRES! My lord theres no bloody tread on them! They wern't bald either you could see TEAR marks all over the bloody thing! What the hell was he doing with his car the other day? We sat there for awhile, while he was explaining things to me.. pretty much every second sentance was "DO IT ON THE DAMN TRACK!"

Hopefully one day... when we go out for a cruise around the country side, he'll let me drive his baby!

In the end.. he was really impressed with my car, the looks, the seats, the chassis, the suspension and the engine compliments kept coming in. But he absolutely loved his WRX.. more than any car he's ever really driven, and he's driven alot..
I was glad to have finally had the chance to experience the car under the hands of somebody who actually knows how to drive it (despite it being on the residential streets)
On the way home, i decided to go around that same route of streets that he went along.. much much slower of course. It seemed to have taken forever.. i didn't realise how long the route was, predominantly due to the extreme rush i was experiencing when he was driving it.

Until now i've just enjoyed the power and acceleration of the car (which might not be much to your standards) and never dared to explore the handling abilities. After today things have gone backwards and now the straight lines are the most boring part of driving the car. Before today i've enjoyed 20% of what the car has to offer.. now i've enjoyed 60. I gotta go to the track these holidays. For those who go tracking frequently, he's number plates are NSW "STI 400" (the ones with the yellow bg), the exterior is bone stock sti.

I've lost all care for going faster in a straight line, and i'm focused now on enjoying what the rest of the car can do. I've lost all boredom of the car and i've falling even more deeply in love with it.

I'm sorry.. but i just wanted to share my experience with you all..

I've always known that the Type R was an extremely capable road handling car, but i've never known exactly, how good is "that good"? Well today i found out, and mate... i'll tell ya what.

It's bloody good!

Now find a local track where you can really explore the suspension and brakes, not forgetting the engine.

Have fun and be safe. But remember wear your seatbelt and obey "Your" limits, the car has higher lmts then you.

Enjoy!

I had a similiar situation. I let a PROFESSIONAL driver take my car out with me riding shot gun. All i could say was WOW!!!. He had my itr doin some crazy some like stopping from 60 in an EXTREMLY short distance (I mean it was shorter than mags posted). It was like a new freaking car. It came to life and was faster than I thought it was. His shifts were like lighting (crazy fast). After letting him drive I realize that I'm only driving the car to about 40% of its ablity and after that I cranked it back up to about 60% but nowhere close to him. Oh the guy used to work for skip barber racing school. ITR

"Every car is as good as it's driver."

Your experience sounds just the same as mine was.

Only mine was on the street
