When doing a timing belt on a single cam. Obviously you set the crank at TDC and put the marks on the gear facing up, however how do you know when you are pefectly straight up ? Or do you mark it or something before removal ?

Similar to a DOHC... The arrow is only approximately upwards. The REAL timing marks are little dimples out at the sprocket teeth. They're supposed to be horizontal, lined up with the top edge of the inside timing cover.
