Default new engine or pay for a timing belt replacement

ok so i bought a 1990 accord last november. it came with 93k on it, and over the last year i put an additional 12k on it.

i'm over-due on a timing belt replacement.

i just came up on $1500 and was thinking about just getting a new engine or should i just pay someone the $600 to replace my timing belt?

WWHTD ???

wow @ wwhtd..that's um, different i guess.

moving on. if you're gonna do a timing belt job you might as well do all the belts (alternator, power steering, timing, tensioners & balancer belt..i believe) with that being said, i just bought a "new" engine and with it i bought all new belts (still awaiting tensioners) point is. regardless, you're going to have to pull off a "overhaul" procedure to feel comfortable that there is a slight chance nothing WILL, not can, go wrong.

what i'm getting at is it's a toss up man, but if i were you i'd just get another F motor, they're decently priced and you'll have a grand more or less if you shop in the right places. good luck

i got mine from ebay, but others may beg to differ. as long as you're dealing with a reputable seller / company it should all go good.

Edit* $600 for a t-belt job? that has scam written all over it.

read the FAQ and do it yourself! therefore you save lotsa money to boost your f...why would you think that you need a timing belt???? check the belt to look for slack, wear, rough spots..to indicate a compromised timing belt

that sounds more accurate, belts and tensioners were $246.76 before my discount kicked in.

as for labor, diy timing belt / water pump by way of TouringAcccord

Then call them out on it. I had my ALL of my belts and my water pump changed for $634.94
On top of that my car had three oil leaks-cam seals, oil pan gasket and my oil cooler was shooting oil out everywhere- I had all of it fixed at the same time and it cost me $1179.99
What I'm getting at is, are you sure those prices are for JUST the timing belt and water pump? I spent close to the same amount your dealership wants to do your t-belt job, at my dealership and got alot more done... I say your dealership is ing you.

think about this, you must be if you're even considering dropping that much on just belts, tensioners and someone who's gonna half *** the job.

maybe i'm speaking because my engine is sitting on a slab of plywood. but we have write ups and tutorials for a reason. there is a step by step walk through on the topic of this thread and it can be found here : https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1908944

he lists the parts & tools needed and there's pictures as well. though it may not be the same engine as yours, i'm sure if u follow the directions similarly you can knock this out on your day off. i'm just tryna help you save some money.

ya a timing belt and belt service job doing it yourself, is not as hard as it looks or sound sin the guide, trust me once you get to it and follow the step to step guide it comes all cake.. the bitch for me was that damn crankshaft bolt other then that, it was pretty easy, everything is in the guide OEM linked up, i promise. cost me 100 bucks to do it myself. (Thats honda parts)

Let's see. Bronx vs. Hendersonville NC. Do you think maybe the normal prevailing labor cost is different??

What Would Honda-Tech Do?? lol That is a new one.

anyways, it seems ~500-600 is pretty normal for the cost of a timing belt from what I've seen users post on here, you gotta remember there is a lot of labor involved in that job. Though I could never bring myself to pay that much when it's really not that bad to do it yourself.

even if you pick up a "new" used engine it's still advised you replace the timing belt because you don't know it history.

I would do the job myself (not just because I've done before) because you learn so much and it saves you so much as well. You could buy all OEM parts (which I would do), any special tools or additional tools you may need and still not spend as much as having a shop do it for you.

and as linked already, I did a write-up on this in hopes that it would help some people out. There is a linked PDF file in the opening post that you can download and print out so you can have it with you while working on the car

What's the word on using an impact wrench (300 ft/lb electric in my case) on the crank bolt? Aye/nay/it'll work but break things?
