crankshaft pulley spinning wiggly
hi,
This shop changed my timing belt. After the belt was changed the crankshaft pulley is making weird sound. Today they charged me $200 to replace it. Now the sound is mostly gone, but the crankshaft pulley spinning not very smoothly as before and kinda wiggle abit. Is it suppose to be like that or not. This is on a 2000 prelude base model. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

+1 also a 2000 base prelude
didnt change the timing belt yet but i tried reinstalling the pulley thinking it was crooked and nothing, changed the pulley and nothing. I was thinking maybe the previous owner removed the balancers but i dont know for sure.

It sounds to me like they either bent something or have it on a little odd. Any reputible shop should be able to back up their own work. If it was fine when you took it in and not fine after they replaced the t-belt then the pully should be on them. Also if you take your car to them with a problem and they only partially fix it then they didn't fix anything in my mind. Basically take it back and make them do it right.
The problem is that the first time I went back, they told me that the noise will go away after driving for awhile. The owner told me that the tb is causing the noise because it is on tight and it will adjust itself over time or he could loosen it. It might broke off if he loosen the tension and it will be my fault. After driving for a little over 100 miles I notice that the crankshaft pulley is wiggyly with the engine on.
if your crank pulley is wiggling, that is not good, most likely they did not torque it to spec, or it may be a bad pulley, but either way, take it back and have them fix it, as this could cause some major problems if it cracks or falls off.

No.
Either the bolt is not tight, the pulley is somehow SERIOUSLY fucked up, or the snout of your crank got bent somehow.

If I were you I'd go back and have them fix that crank pulley. Last week my crank pulley started to wiggle and later on at night it came off on the freeway. You can do some serious damage if that happens. I know of a few people that have bent their valves because of that.
Hi,
Just got back from another shop to get the bolt tighten. This guy told me that it should not be a problem if it wiggle a bit since i have 107k miles on the engine. If i heard any weird noise, just bring it back to him. I try to upload a video with the engine running on sunday. Thanks for all the response.

i don't think the crank pulley breaking would have anything to do with the valves. i think that would only happen if the timing belt snaps. the problem you would have if your crank pulley breaks would be your car would over heat real fast because nothing is running the water pump and the battery would die quickly because no alternator and PS would also be gone.
But ya i wouldnt rev the engine too much until the problems gone better yet not even drive the car

if you don't have your under car splash shield (that most people rip off or lose anyway) I hear that if a rock flies up and hits your crank pulley it can cause it to wobble.
Words right from a Honda Dealership mechanic.
so its probably a warped pulley or a bent crank shaft. No matter how many times you pull it on and off it will probably always wobble unless you get it repaired and rebalanced. (or what ever they do to fix it)(hopefully you don't have to replace crank shaft or ur fuked though)

My stock pulley was missing a a piece like if it hit something, so i guess that could be the cause of mine wiggling, changed the pulley and still does it, cars been running strong and fine for about 10k like this, no problems or unusual noises.

thank for all the reply. So far I brought it to two shop and both said that i needed to replace my crankshaft since it is bented. Both quote roughly 2 grand for parts and labor. I guess I get a new engine when I have the money and drive it until it is broken.
How the hell do you bend the crankshaft snout through normal driving
, maybe the shop that changed your belt did something they shouldn't trying to loosen/tighten the pulley?
I had a pulley wobbling once, and it turned out that the keyway had become 'elongated' due to it not being tightened down properly on the last service.

yes you can bent your valves. the pully holds the woodruff (sp?) key in place which is the sole link keeping your bottom end and top end in sync. if the pulley comes off, then the key will fall out, and youll smack ur valves.
i made this noob mistake before back when i was 17. my bolt sheared, pulley fell off, and i drove about 500 ft before the key fell out. ill never do that again lol. i did an h22 sway about 2 weeks later when i found out my valves were toast
so if they fucked up ur key it might not be seated right and the pulley might not be sitting flush on the crank causing it to wiggle.

Is it an OEM crank pulley or an aftermarket underdrive? It looks like an underdrive but I can't tell for sure. An underdrive pulley, especially a cheaper one, would more than likely wobble. I have one on my 98 base because that was all that I could get at the time and it wobbles at idle, but not at anything above 1000 rpm. I am changing it out asap.
i have the EXACT same problem. i took it to many different people. in the end its the crankshaft that is bent. i had someone measure it. its off 6/1000 which is acceptable. my old one was all fucked up. i don't know how but one day it shredded the belt and came off. got a new one with new key but it was still doing the same thing. it wiggles but it won't fall off. its been like that for 4-5 months now, no problem. i just don't race with it anymore b/c im scared hahah. im planning to get a new motor too. this seems like a common problem with us 5th gens. hope this helps.
