Weird Wheel hop issue. need help!
Hey guys, I got a weird wheel hop issue that i'm having trouble diagnosing. It's been going on for a couple months now but seams to be getting wrose. The problem is i'm not launching it at all, I'm at a stop and slowly and smoothly try accelerating in 1st from a stop light but it'l hop until I get it fully in gear and above 10 mph. The weird thing is it's only when I try and do it smoothly, if I rev it up to 4k and go it'l be fine and have no wheel hop. My mounts are fine, axles should be good. Any help would be great!
What exactly is clutch chatter then? Because what I'm noticing are the wheels physically hopping and the steering wheel shaking. By the way it only does it when at a stop and going into first if that helps at all.
If you arent "launching" the car, then you arent spinning your tires and you certainly arent getting wheel hop. If the wheels are physically hopping, then yes you have issues outside of the clutch, however hopping wheels upon normal, smooth acceleration shouldnt happen.
Hmm I'll get a friend to help me out or something, and drive it while I watch, cause to me it feels like it's exactly doing that. I also notice some part of my suspension makes a kind of creeking/ thudding sound, it's hard to explain but I can hear it when I go from a stop light or when I floor it in 1st or 2nd, or pretty much make sudden movements, like something's going out though I don't know what.
are you giving it enough gas when you let the clutch out. I know mine shudders if i dont give enough gas and the rpms drop low. is it the clutch factory or aftermarket?
Yeah i'm giving it enough gas I've been driving it for 2 years now I'd feel dumb if I forgot how to drive it. It's stock clutch, not sure how many miles because it's a jdm swap, but I haven't had any problems with the clutch yet, can still launch it and it acts fine.

It sounds like clutch chatter to me.
Clutch chatter is when the clutch goes slip, grab, slip, grab, slip, grab.
Feels just like wheel hop (witch is the tires going, slip, grab, slip, grab, slip, grab.)
Only about 10% of the JDM motors that end up here have the stock clutch on them.
(Just about every company out there makes a clutch that looks like the stock one but isn’t)

That’s most likely piston slap and is !!REALLY!! bad for your motor.

what causes it? my old motor used to do it, but i just finished a swap

I third the clutch chatter sounding like. Clutch chatter is created from one or more of the clutch components from being warped(clutch, pressure plate, or flywheel) and this causes the clutch not to engage smoothly like it was stated already with the grab, slip. That grabbing and slipping is from the wave affect of the warped component making contact and then not making contact. It feels just like wheel hop but more of a lighter, less violent version. I have the same problem on my car right not also. But I finally yesterday got around to pulling my PP and flywheel off my old motor, now just need to find time to put all teh new stuff into my car now.

i looked up piston slap and mine wasnt doing that. i think my problem was a torn rear torque mount, it would cause the engine to shake at low rpms

How low??
I would say your rite, piston slap shouldn’t make it shake that much.

it would be like if i let the clutch out too quick and then was accelerating from just under 1k rpm or right around there

Piston slap is under about 500 RPM most of the time.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Do you even know what piston slap is? I highly doubt thats piston slap, if your car bogs under 500rpms, you are hearing is "knock" or denotation from the ecu slapping on 50* timing to try and keep the car running. Piston slap is highly uncommon in stock hondas and is generally only heard with aftermarket pistons at startup before they warm up and expand....generally JEs who seem to run about 3Xs the stock piston to sidewall clearance.

Ok thanks guys yeah sounds like it's more likely clutch chatter, so now I guess I'll wait and see if it gets worse or not, and in the mean time look for new clutch and components. About the piston slap thing, yeah I'm pretty sure that's not piston slap, any engine shutters when at low rpm and ur in a higher gear. Try putting ur car in 5th going 25 mph, it'l shutter, not much but u can feel it.... It's normal.

thats the kinda shudder im talking about. i think it was made worse because my rear mount was shot

QUOTE Sport Compact Car Magazine: the stock WRX ECU is not only extremely adaptive but also exercises a huge authority range over both fuel and ignition curves.
With the knock sensor on full song, the stock ECU might retard timing as much as 20 degrees.

Where did you hear that a stock honda ECU could add 50* of timing?
I know 2 people that have cracked piston skirts from bogging their
stock Honda under 400 RPM and laying in to the gas.
Unless im way off, denotation doesn't crack skirts.
Knock, and slap aside.
+50* timing at 400-500RPM would create cylinder presser so high
BTDC that it would stop the motor.
P.S. This is way off topic, I will not post on this again here.

P.P.S. I'm not looking for a pissing contest.
