Good deal for an 01 R6?
I posted awhile ago about an 05 R6 being sold for only $5k but when I went to go look at the bike, the owner had lied about it not being dropped (it had been dropped on BOTH sides) so now I am looking into a local 2001 R6 Champions Edition.
The bike has around 21K miles on it and has been dropped a few times. The right headlight is cracked, the clutch cable needs to be replaced, and the clutch will also have to be adjusted. The fairings are scratched and possibly even cracked. However, the bike has a clean title and has the following mods. 520 chain conversion, Hindle exhaust, brand new EBC clutch, and jetted carbs. I talked the seller into giving me the bike for $1500 but I want to make sure that this is a good deal.
I was also wondering if there is a chance that the frame is bent from it being dropped multiple times. Thanks in advance!

That sounds like a pretty good deal. Cosmetic damage is an easy fix...however, finding the C.E. plastics might be hard and run you a little more money. If it has a clean title, that means the frame shouldn't be bent...if it was inspected correctly.
I figure that he might have not reported it to the insurance company. Since this is going to be my first bike, I was going to just do what it takes to get it on the road (clutch work) and get some experience.
The owner did say that the bike has been repainted
but told me that there were scratches. I can't remember if he told me whether or not some of the plastics are cracked though... I'm going to be giving him a call and asking him just to be sure.

since no one else has said it yet...
gear/msf/insurance?
and i'm not sure that an R1 would make a great first bike. sounds like a pretty good deal, just make sure that you respect that bike

sorry about that... i misread. i get slightly dyslexic when i get tired and i read it as "06 R1"
MSF is motorcycle safety foundation. it is a course offered for beginning riders that teaches you the basics of motorcycle riding, such as control operation, and basic manuvering, including low speed swerving and tight u-turns. from what i've heard, taking this weekend class statistically is about equivalent to 2 years of un-instructed riding experience. here in TX i think it cost me $180, got a 15% discount on my bike insurance, exempted me from the riding portion of my motorcycle license exam, and got me $300 off the purchase of my new bike. plus i got to ride someone else's bike for the weekend and didn't have to worry about dropping it.
oh, and sounds like a great deal on a good bike!

$1500 is a great deal, even for an 01. look for scratches on the frame. if you're really worried about it, you can always buy another frame for a few hundred bucks and still have a good bike for <$2500.

First off, MSFgearinsurance is stressed here for a reason, yeah sometimes it seems like people go off the end when it comes to making it clear that you need it, but generally speaking, if people are interested in learning how to ride, they should know about gear and insurance at the very least, and take an MSF approved course
Secondly, buying another frame is alot harder than you make it sound =X Believe me, Ive got the same bike and the same problem... frame damage? Its a piece of junk-- total that ****.
Other than that, it doesnt sound like a bad deal, but respect the bike, especially since it has a 520 conversion...
...small mistakes have a nasty habit of becoming huge problems on a bike like that

getting a new frame is not as hard as you think dinges. you're just not looking in the right places.

Wowee. This thread went down the pooper real fast
. Well, I called the guy and the bike has some small cracking in the fairings but nothing too major. He told me that from about 10 feet away the bike looks perfect so I'm going to have to take his word since he is delivering the bike to me for an addition $50. I hope all goes well! Will have pics up tomorrow.

Good luck with the purchase.
I think buying a bike like that as a first bike is definitely to your advantage. If you drop it or expletive it up, it wasn't that expensive to get anyway. Have fun!

The seller dropped off the bike a few hours ago and I can't help but say, the bike is almost mint!!! There are NO scratches on the front fairings and the crack in the headlight is not too bad. The rear fairing is slightly cracked, but is not visible unless pointed out. I will have pics up in the morning
