civics have allways had that feature, where you must pull out the door handle inorder to lock the door

heh mine never did that..... the lock just wont move unless i pull on the inside handle not the outside.... if that were true what the hell is the point of keyless entry i would have to walk up pull the handle then push the button ?? i dont think so ive had my car for almost 4 years now and never had this problem something must have gotten messed up when someone had to get in my car to tow it away (long story) anyone have any ideas what could have happened ?? anyone know how to take the latch/locking mechanism out of the door ? i couldnt figure it out today.... and i mean the actual latch at the end of the door not the handle

That is completely normal for hondas and I didnt find that out until i bought my first honda in 97 and I ended up busting the little lock lever. heh, try to find one of those outside of a junkyard for under 70 bux.

I think everybody has missed the point.

1. Yours is doing this ALL THE TIME.
2. NORMAL Civic do this with the door OPEN.
3. Normal civics do not do this with the door CLOSED

The point of this "feature" is so you can't lock your keys in the car. You can lock the door when the door is closed, but Honda's intent was so you'd have to lock the door WITH THE KEY when you got out of the car. Most of us found out that you can defeat this by actuating the inside door handle. This "fools" the mechanism into the closed setting, and allows you to close the lock bar.

Yours has appeared to have lost the ability to know when the door is closed. You will probably need to replace either the handle mechanism, or the latch. Good luck. Shitty job, and the parts ain't cheap.

i cant unlock the car from the outside anymore either ... i put the key in but the lock wont move to lock or unlock. i cant push the button inside to lock or unlock either without pulling the interior car door lever (regardless if whether the door is open or closed) which I HAVE NEVER HAD TO DO BEFORE.... and my power locks wont even unlock or lock the door anymore... ive had a keyless entry on this car since i bought it and i always push the unlock button from many feet away and and just walk up and open the door.... ive never had to pull the handle to unlock it... it just all of the sudden started doing this

try disconnecting the outside door handle and see if you keyless entry works. just curious if the outside handle is broken. also try your keyless entry with the interior handle disconnected (be sure to leave the lock lever attached)

My bet from the symptoms you describe is that the interior door handle assembly is broken. Disassemble the door and have a look at what's going on. It's somewhere in the two mechanisms or the bars connecting them. Good luck.

sounds good thanks shawn... however does anyone know how to get the whole latching mechanism out of the door i cant figure it out... i can the door panel off get all the handles etc off and remove the screws at the end of the door that hold the mechanism on so that it is loose in there but i still cant get it out for some reason. and one more thing... everyone is saying this is normal does that mean my car was broken before and now all of the sudden it works fine... and is it supposed to do this on the passenger side b/c it sure doesnt on my 95
