Black smoke from vtec...
Hey! Good time to introduce myself..... I'm Jon. i've got a 5g (94) ex w/ dual flowmaster mufflers and an intake and for some reason, every time i take it past 5k, it just spits black shi* out of the mufflers... It's done this for well over a year now since i've had the exaust done but i'vee never found a true cause.... It burns oil just like any car with approx. 120k miles car should do but i still dont understand the black smoke... Someone suggested that i go to a thicker oil today like 15w-40 (using 10w-30 mobil right now) Any comments, suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.....

that is called carbon. take a piece of white paper and hold it up to your exhaust pipe then have a friend blip the throttle pretty hard and then notice the paper, it will probably be covered in a black flaky substance. Carbon and water are by-products of combustion.
Opening up your exhaust pipe to a larger diameter and having a spent catylitic converter are usually some of the explanztions

You might have a blow-by's since your motor is old now. When I used to have a GS-R motor with high milage, black smoke came out when I hit vtec wich was about 4400rpm. I did the leak down test and wow, it was pretty sad. So I believe that 1.6 sohc motor has vtec point of about 5400rpm?? or somewhere like that. So it sounds the same thing that I have experienced. However, mine did eat a little more oil than regular cars. So, who knows, try some leak down test or something and see what happens. Oh yea, your car looks pretty good. I don't personally like the altezza's but that's what makes everyone unique. Good luck.

I HATE the altezzas... I bought them way back when they weren't on every damn car in the world so i thought they weree cool... So i figured i didn't need the stockers any moree so i sold the stockers to my friend... BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!! I've since ordered some stockers again but I'm stuck with these for a while.... 
What kinda civic do you have stocker? What part of st. louis are you in... Thanks for you're help guys.... I appreciate people who actually KNOW what they're talking about rather than stupid people (ahem....Superhonda.com...cough)

Ricemaster (r), I live in West County and I have a 98 civic coupe, completely stock.
