Poor fuel economy, rough idle, no low end power
I just had a new top end put on my 1993 Accord LX. I am having a few problems since in the install. I have noticed my fuel economy is fairly poor. The car has almost no low end power; it seems to come alive between 2500-3000 rpm. I know a stock f22 does not have much low end power, but the car almost does not want to go because of the lack of power off the line. The idle seems to be a little off too; it kinda bounces between 700-800 rpm. It seems like some kind of vacuum leak, but I am far from an expert. I am at work now and don’t want to go out there and start messing with the car blindly. Any tips or things to look for would be helpful.
Thanks!
Brian

dam
it could be a number of problem
what do you mean top ?
do you mean a new front end with another engine?
Low Mileage import? or just another engine with high mileage?

I had a complete new head put on. I think its a vacuum since that would explain all the problems. I have never diegnosed a vacuum leak before so in not sure where to start. Are there any common places this could happen, assuming that is the problem.
As far as i know the oil pump went out, starved the head, melted the camshaft into the head and then broke the cam in half. I had a brand new oil pump, head, timing belt and a few other things replaced. The engine seems to run great other then these minor problems.

not many vacuum hoses
its kinda hard to mess up the hoses
I had the same problem on my 93 accord LX
I had someone replace the timing belt
and they did not set the timing
and my car was suffering bad
so you should check that out
if you keep ridin it like that youll mess up ur new head

Why do
you
type like this?
And how is it going to mess up his head? A vaccum leak isn't all that big of a deal, a hose might be misplaced or not seated all the way
The EGR valve shouldn't have anything to do with it, unless a vaccum hose was misplaces as I said. Or if the hose is correct, the EGR diverts gas + oil back into the combustion chamber at real low vaccum, like idle and low end. It might be old or ports may be clogged

Did you have your block checked...or a compression check after the new head was bolted on?
Other things to check would be your usual tune-up parts. Air & Fuel Filters, plugs, wires, cap rotor.
Re-Check your timing. vacuum hoses, give your catalytic converter a kick and if there is a rattle that could cause your poor fuel economy and power loss. A poorly working O2 sensor can as well. There are a number of things that could cause this type of situation with a car this age.
I just replaced everything I listed above on my 96 and it needed it badly. I was getting a measly 23mpg. After the tune up, replacement of the cat and O2 I am now getting approx. 31mpg.

all I was really saying was to have the timing checked
if the timing was set wrong yea theres a chance the valves will bend
I had a similar problem on mine

I went under the hood last night and could not hear any vacuum leaks. But I did notice that when the car is completely cool (sitting overnight) it runs fine, full power and idles fine. Does this make more sense to anyone?
