Default Frame Welding

Quick question for those of you who have wrecked before and brought your bike back from the dead--

-Ive got a hairline crack in my frame, and while it is tiny and almost unnoticeable, including when riding, I dont want it to keep getting bigger and bigger... Do any of you have any experience with frame welding? I realize how dangerous it is to ride around with a shot frame, but if it still rides straight, and if i take it easy, should welding be a serious option to consider? I dont plan on tracking or stunting this bike ever... mostly just used to puttputt around town, especially in light of this problem

Thanks in advance HT!

i'm sure you could weld it, but do you really want to?
Technically you're riding around on a totaled bike. The resale value is absolutely gone, which is probably one of the reasons you're set on keeping it.

Was there any kind of accident with an accident report or anything? How did this happen? Is it too late to claim on insurance?

If it were me i'd hunt ebay for just a frame.

Yeah, the bike isnt going anywhere... even if i did have the chance to sell it, it would be grossly irresponsible, even should the new owner know about the frame-- its one thing if i go down riding a bad bike, but im not about to pass it off on someone else

To answer your other question though, financially i am on my own here, and Ive been trolling ebay for frames-- while they are cheaper than getting it elsewhere, they still fetch a pretty penny lol

Im not sure how to go about transfering VINs either... i know that will be a big problem

Where the crack is makes a big difference if its a cracked weld it is possible but i wouldn't let just anyone weld it. but if the crack has shot into the frame from a weldi wouldn't touch that frame . the problem will that is once you weld the crack the heat will most likely ruin the integrity of the metal around it. Generally welding on a frame is frowned down upon and most real welds the guys that you can trust wont touch it

In an aluminum frame I WOULD NOT ride the bike... if you can see the crack, it is in an advanced degradation state. If you do choose to have it fixed, please look for a studio that uses Zyglow to detect additional fractures. if you can not justify that price(and most will not be able to) try for a new frame. Is the bike still under warranty? Advance manufacturers use Zyglow to detect visually imperceptible fractures, if you can see it game over as far as I am concerned, specially on a street bike. Been popping to many wheelies?

Yeah, the crack is not sitting on a weld, and compromising the integrity of the surrounding metal was exactly what i was afraid of =\

...and no lol, i dont stunt or even do wheelies... but i am also not the first owner of the bike... or the second for that matter

--and theres no saying who did what to the thing
