Default turning head to TDC

hey!

i have a sohc head, and i was wondering if it's safe to simply turn the cam to get it to TDC?
i've honestly only done it on a timing belt while the motor was assembled, and i'm always paranoid about messing stuff up.

so is that the proper way to do it?just turn the gear counter clockwise till its tdc?
if not, what would be correct?

keep on trucking

No special antics I use - just turn the cam gear CCW until "up" faces .... up.

Pulled right out of the service manual:

1. Set the timing belt drive pulley so the No.1 piston is at top dead center (TDC). Align the groove on the timing belt drive pulley to the pointer on the oil pump.

2. Set the camshaft pulley to TDC. Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with the cylinder head marks.

- 96-00 manual

1. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal:
Only key points are described here.

2. Position teh crankshaft and the cam pulleys as shown before installing the timing belt.

A. Set the crankshaft so that the No. 1 piston is at top-dead-center (TDC).

NOTE: Align the groove of the teeth side of the timing belt drive pulley to the pointer on the oil pump.

B. D15B7, D15B8 engine: Align the TDC marks on the cam pulley with the cylinder head upper surface
D16Z6 engine: Align the TDC mark on the cam pulley with pointer on the back cover.
D15Z1 engine: Align the TDC marks on the pulley with pointers (triangle marks) on the back cover.

........

7. Check the crankshaft pulley and the cam pulley at TDC.

8. If the cam pulley is not positioned at TDC, remove the timing belt and adjust the positioning following the procedure on page 6-62 (page 5-62 is where steps 1 and 2 were on), then reinstall the timing belt.

After installation, adjust the tension of each belt.

- 92-95 civic service manual

No special antics offered by Honda either.
