Default Bike Gurus, how much does this cost to fix? UPDATE

going to look at a 250 ninja... and the upper fairing is cracked. also note the mirror is also scratched up. it looks like it was dropped, from the large chip next to it. what do you guys think?

bike is 03 ninja 250 w/10k miles, muzzy exhaust, with the usual "new tires/oil change done recently"

how much should i offer?

thanks, sorry if ive been peppering this place with newb threads. at least im not like this guy right? https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2137610

Assuming the ONLY damage is cosmetic, I wouldn't offer more than $1800.

There are a lot of clean Kawi 250's out there for cheap. The bike hasn't changed much, if at all. Base your decision more on condition than year or price.

definitely, the only thing is, i have to use year and miles more than id like to because im not experienced enough on a motorcycle to spot nuances. hes asking 1900. kbb is 2500 for retail, 1475 for trade in, and i was thinking of 1600-1700 for the bike. partly because of the fairing, and partly because i dont like the green. this is assuming bike is in perfect working condition.

does the damage on the fairing indicate that it should be more than cosmetic? the chip looks kind of harsh, but to me, all i see is a hard drop from a stop. how much would it cost to purchase a new front fairing? not like im gonna buy one, i just want to know how much for bargaining purposes

From the hit it took to the clip-on, it could have a bent fork and/or clip-on.

Is there any damage to the footpeg and pedal?

I don't know how much fairings cost, but you can check on Ron Ayers' website.

I guess my estimate of $1800 was way too high.

If the clip-on tube is broken or bent, you may be able to tell with a sticky throttle (as in, the throttle does not spring shut when you twist it open). A sticky throttle could also be attributed to rubbing against the bar-end.

You can also look from the top and see if the angle of the right clip-on is different from the other.

thanks for the tips. its hard getting into bikes without any other friends, because no one can help you buy, and you dont really know how to buy until you get a bike and see the issues firsthand, and the cycle keeps going.

just trying to get out of it. if you have any other tips, id appreciate it a lot. pm is fine too

the sticky gave me a good motorcycle evaluation sheet.

If everything mechanical is straight try to give him 1500 or maybe less for it. Hell i wouldn't worry about the cosmetic damage. If its your first bike more than likely your going to drop it to so why fix it? You will always be able to sell a ninja 250 no matter what. Thats what the 250 is for learning to ride.

thats the entire reasoning for the 250. my ideal bike would be perfect mechanically, but have **** for plastics. too bad theres a correlation between the two. im hoping to pick one up soon, and sell it this coming summer. i should be able to get the same amount back, given summer is when riders flock to craigslist.

Youve got the right idea

Even here in socal $1800 seems high for a ninja 250... there will be christmas bills to pay soon and people desperate to dump thier bikes... i say either lowball or keep trolling craiglist

yeah, as of right now, 1500 would probably be max i would pay. this is assuming there is no mechanical damage. registration lasts until december, how much is registration for a ninja here in cali?

I'm up in Sacramento.

I just sold a 2004 Kawi 250 for 2,100$. Granted, the bike only had 3k miles on it and had never been dropped.

Just telling you this so you can sorta gauge the worth of the bike you're thinking of purchasing.

thanks. it astounds me when people with 250s try to sell them for 3k+. ive seen both an f3, and f4 both selling for 2k here, and i just missed out on both of them.

update:

just went to look at the bike.

clutch engages fine, clip ons look straight. front fairing crack looks to be only cosmetic. it starts up nicely, batt terminals are clean, chain is tight, disks look clean, and tires are almost new. regis is until Dec, no weird sounds from the engine. forks are clean, and throttle snaps back fine. clutch engages like other 250s ive ridden before. basically... it looks like what a 10k mi bike should look like (with the drop)

he was asking 1900. i offered 1500, he said 1600, so i told him 1500 cash, which he accepted. i told him id think about it (as in... ask honda-tech), and would get back at him before work ends.

his story is that he bought it for his wife as is, but she never rode it. as far as i can tell, story checks out, but it does look like the drop did scratch up a side reflector and the muffler. looks like it got tipped over to the right side (see pics).

i think its an ok deal. im planning on riding it till the summer, in which case i would sell. is there any worst case scenario in which i could not recoup most, if not all, of my money come summer? or is this a pretty good deal that i should take?

IMO go for it and don't bother fixing the minimal damage, just ride it as is.

Seems like a pretty solid deal.

I sold my '01 250 with 7k miles for $2,200.

i bought it!

i noticed the right engine fairing was also not in good shape, so i knocked 50 off the asking price.

03 ninja, 10k miles, with a hard drop to the right side, for 1450. come summer, it should go for a bit more.

thanks for the advice. ill def be back asking for more newb help
