Shell gasoline wreaking havoc on FI Hondas?
Okay, a little off topic perhaps, but I have no idea what's up with Shell gasoline in Cali recently... every time I fill up with Shell fuel, I get slight detonation under WOT near 6psi on my D16Y8 (stock internals). When using Unocal 76, Chevron... it's all OK.
What's going on? Anyone else in Cali experiencing this problem? One would figure that Shell is a first rate gasoline company!

Well, I know I dont live in Ca, but the regulations on fuels there are so tough that it is hard for most companies to get the octane numbers high enough. They have used alcohol in the fuel which is more environmentally friendly, but it is bad for knock resistance. Just use the fuel from places which tend to give you the best results.

Here in Canada...nothing beats Chevrons 94 octance.....a friend of mine has a 81 GMC Sierra Truck done up completely and he has to drive like 80kms to get to achevron....well he was out of gas and needed to go fill up so he put some mohawk gas (94 octane) in and went to go to the chevron...he truck would stutter and sputter going up hills...he had little bit of chevron in his other tank so he flipped it over and the truck ran great.... Chevron
Anything else
.....No Chevron in Calgary

Ethanol is the way to go here in cali, that MTBE crap most gas stations use is crap for the environment (lol, like an open downpipe isn't). I have a Shell station right near my house but i drive about two miles down the road for 76 because my car feels like it bogs with Shell. 91 octane
I always use Chevron, if I can. Even ignoring it's resistance to knock, it's a better fuel because it has the techron fuel cleaner in it which is the only fuel cleaner on the market, that I know of, that doesn't deteriorate plastic and rubber components in the system...I also know a guy that works at a Chevron here in Portland (full-service only) and they really keep their lines and pumps clean...just to share.
boy does it pay to be in a non-emission state. i use 93 shell and chevron. they're both my pics here. unocal 76 was the shiznit when i used to live home in cali.
Shell is not so bad out here really... not the best but alot of very nice shell stations around here. They do have 10%ethanol in their gas they say here also (seen it on the sticker on pump).
Could be the owner of that shell franchise getting bad or sub-standard gas though.
Couldn't you call those test people (state ones or whatever) and have them check... they do that **** on a tip from people calling in. Anyone know the name for it though... I forgot?
Anyways I like the QT or certain Mobil stations, and a far away station by track has 100 octane cam2... 76 station I think... will hope to make use of it sometime.

while you guys are happy with your 93-94 octane, i moved back to philippine with my boosted b18c and PETRON has 97+ octane unleaded gas
*hopefully it is 97 octane* haha

i got bad gas from chevron once... never had problems with 76... used mobile and texaco a few times and had no noticable problems. of course when i heard knocking, it had been a few months without octane boost.
