Default Tach stuck

When I turn my car on the tach shoots up to like 3k and stays there.
I know the tach wires have to be shorting out somewhere, the car is not actually idling at 3k. What wires can I test to resolve this issue, what wires deal with the tach and what voltage should the be getting.
I need to fix this problem so I can datalog correctly, its showing my rpms jump from 0-7k over and over

Anyone know which wires can effect the rpm signal? The connector behind the speedo(does not have the blue tach wire going into it) causes the tach too shoot up right when i plug it in, however the tach will not work with just the blue wire connector (behind the tach)plugged into it.

I searched for a very long tie, I don't really post unless I really can't find the answer myself, as you can see ive been a member here a lot longer then you have, yet I have less post. If you have found out something that will help me using the magic search button, please enlighten me, all I wanna do is fix my rpm so I can data log correctly.

first thing you need to do is f*cking learn engrish!!!

download the helms for your car and follow the wiring diagram or try to manually follow the wire from your coil to your cluster. It is going to be a bitch, but that is what your gonna have to do.

PS if you can get your hands on another cluster, throw it in and see if it works. if it does you know its your tach, if it doesn't you know its your wiring. no need to dig through wires if you don't have to

i'm sorry, i came up with 107 topics on this, does this not help you? and i'm sure you can find more if you search post bodies, archived.

btw my igniter went bad once, and made the tach bounce around.

sounds like the tach wire is getting shorted out or the wrong signal, all i know is that they work off resistance or voltage, and something has changed that voltage or resestance. you might need to run a new wire to the tach

i was looking thru the search results and i found your post from 3/2/07 titled "weird tach", and I was wondering if that issue was resolved, notice I posted some possibly helpfull info at the bottom of that post.

and re-reading that made me think that maybe your tach has just gone bad. do you have the old cluster (with a tach) to check against? have you removed and inspected your cluster? make sure all the screws holding the tach on (from the back) are tight. look for burned or blemished areas on the circuit board (more like circuit paper)

edit: i noticed that you did wire up the 91 cluster in you 88, is that correct? if so go back and check that wiring.

Thanks for posting I resolved my issue. As for the engrish comment, sorry I don't get it, are you refering to my typo or what. Anyways, yes I went through the igniter issues and stuff when I searched. I was specifically looking for which wires could effect the tach, which I never found when I searched. I never said when I searched there were no results, sorry for the misunderstanding.

No, I suspected a short, but I finally got my hands on anoter cluster to try out. It was the cluster. Oh well, I wanted to do a cluster swap anyways. 8) Btw I found the entire cluster pin out if anyone needs it. http://www.geocities.com/speed...uster
