WHat do you guys use to hold exhaust/ic pipping together when starting to weld?
for proper alignment try using a big c-clamp with a short length of angle iron welded on the inside of each side of the clamp. i'm sure there are better ways though. usually i just hold one end sticking straight up out of a vice, then carefully balance the other piece on top of it. if it has a funny bend or is off balanced, i will find a way to prop the two ends together on my welding table so they line up.

thats a pretty good idea, i think im going to try that. i also use fat masking take once i mark the pipe where i need its rotation to be, then tape it up so its flush allaround then tack it and pull the tape back as i tack.

Yeah, that's what I was implying.
A hammer tack requires your pieces to be butted together, but it's just a quick stomp on the pedal. It turns the metal molten quickly, but won't blow it out, it'll just lightly tack it together. This is what I use on any pipes I joing for mockup. They're not that strong, but once I have things where I want it I may add a tack with filler here and there, then weld away when I'm done.

c-clamp vise grips with a piece of angle iron welded to them.
you can also get special pipefitters clamps that have special thumb screws on them for adjusting the high-low while keeping the pipe clamped and secure.
both suggestions are of Irwin Brand Vise Grips!

LOL
When I tacked my exhaust I used 3 oem Honda jacks to hold the exhaust tubing in place while tacked.
With limited space it worked pretty well at holding up the exhaust. A whole lot better tan I expected.

Never do this while the piece you're welding is also touching the ground, while you have one knee on the ground... Yes, you can get shocked. Yes, if will leave a mark on your....3rd leg... Yes, it hurts.
I thought my pants were on fire, grabbed my crotch, no fire. Then the pain hit.
Grounding out a hand and getting a shock across your chest is one thing. Getting it to the ****...well, that's a whole new experience I hope no one else goes through. But if you do, don't worry, the equipment still works.
I haven't tried kneeling while welding something that is resting across my leg since then. Musta been sweaty down there.

seriously.... do you guys really have a hard time tacking things?
not trying to be a dick but i have never once had a problem. i just mark things then move them to the table and tack then test fit. very simple.
and i tried a $90 pipe clamp made for holding pipe. and it didn't have the clamping force to hold the **** together. so back to grabing it with my hands.
