Seat Pan Swap Problems. EG seats into a EF. Need safety opinions.
Ok first, I'm putting together a beater car with the winter, my 89 hatch. I got it with some beat up and rigged 89 crx seats in it. I want seats that mount correctly to the floor and match the rears.
So I picked up a set of EG seats for next to nothing at the junkyard.
I removed both seat pans and go to put the EF seat pan on the EG bottom seat.
First problem is the EF seat pan pivot point is in the middle area of the seat, and the EG pivot point is on the outside of the pan. Solution: cut a small slit on the bottom half of the seat to allow the tab to come through. OK no big deal, will be easy to hide.
Next problem. The recline mechanism on the seats is on opposite sides. DOH! After some scratching of my head and lurking through some threads I find a easy solution: Use the driver side back rest on the passenger side seat pan, and vise versa. Yes it will look a bit funny due to the headrest of the EG seats, but its a beater, and only someone who knows what they are looking at will notice. But at least now the back rest is mounted half way on the seat pan.
Next problem. Remember I said the EF pan has the pivot point on the inside of the seat pan vs. the EG seat pan having the pivot point on the outside? Yeah well this causes another problem.
A 3 inch gap between the mounting points:

Solution: Relocate the bracket to the outside of the seat pan.
Next problem.......I don't weld.
Solution:
A 3 inch sleave and a 3 inch longer grade 8 bolt

My concern:
How safe will this be? Will twisting of the seat become a problem? Mainly in an accident is what I'm scared of. Like I said I plan to use grade 8 hardware to ensure strength of the bolt.
What do you guys thing?

I had EG seats in my rex a while back. They were a pain and dont have any pics of the brackets but we basically had to get some flat bar and creat my own mounts. Its going to sit alot higher than the stock ef seats will. You will need to drill some holes to make it work. Im pulling my carpet out of the car tonight so ill get a snap of where we had to drill and post it up for you.

I'm not drilling any holes in my floor. I'm doing a seat pan swap so I will be able to use the stock seat rails and retain a close to stock seat height as well.
My question is:
Will my sleve and bolt be strong enough?

I have to say, I dont think the single extended bolt will be strong enough, especialy in an accident. it will bend (or what its attached to will bend) without support.
But i do think it would be fine with some bracing, or by welding in and extending that bracket (the one thats too short) to where it needs to be,.
do you have a access to a welder?
sorry I cant tell, but can you use the ef seat back (inner frame) and cover it with the eg cover and pad instead? Im sure if i could see it, this would be more obvious to me.
this looks like it turned into quite the project.
good luck

Nah, you can't use the EF seat back due to the style of the EG headrest.
I'm taking it into my shop tomorrow to have one of the other techs give me an opinion for a better way to set this up.

I just discovered the same exact issue. My only guess is that you can use the bracket from the ef seat to fix the problem, since i believe it is bolted up on the inside there. Since this thread is 3 years old, you probably already figured something out.. and if so, i am all ears..
edit: Found the solution.. https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/my-how-swap-seats-88-89-ef-2189540/ you need to swap the seat back as well as the pan to make everything work..
