Default Need new radiator, do i take the mechanic's advice? help

So i went to my friends house this weekend to hook up my capacitor and other crap, and we noticed my radiator had a crack in it

we ask his dad (who has been a mechanic for Honda for many years) and he says "you gotta get that replaced asap. and buy a radiator made by Honda. dont buy aftermarket. honda parts for honda cars, nothing else"

He said a Honda made Radiator could cost between $200-300

on ebay, an aftermarket radiator costs about $100

should i listen to him or just go aftermarket?

i need this radiator asap, it cant wait...

junk yard = 40 bucks

there is nothing wrong with the aftermarket radiators. i do agree on other componets (ignition, fuel delivery etc). hell fork out some dough and geat an aluminum one from koyo for somewhere like that

ah, i forgot about junk yards

but dont you think it would be kinda hard to find a prelude?

but anyways, i would fork out the extra cash but im so very tight on money right now, and if i dont go with an aftermarket, i gotta wait about a week or two until i get the money for the Honda made one.

I don't have a Honda Made Radiator, and my car's been running fine with it for almost two years. Go for a Koyo if you can find one.

I had to replace my cracked radiator earlier this year and the guy at the Honda part's desk actually recommended an aftermarket radiator. Which is what I already was going to get after I heard their price.

i think replacing a radiator would beat JB weld... i mean as a temporary fix if you're broke to the point where you're eating ramen and repackaging ketchup from fast food places... but otherwise its worth replacing since its fairly easy/straight forward to do.

I wouldn't use JB weld for a radiator. I used it on an intake bracket only to have it break in a week.

Yeah, just get one from ebay and it will be fine. You may have minor fitment issues as is the case with cheaper parts, but if you are a compotent installer it will work out fine.

from honda i think its 300+ dollars.. i wouldn't bother just because.. well a radiator is a radiator IMO.. unless if you're abusing your car and getting coolant temps to boiling point i think you're okay... i actually would go get a junkyard radiator, as long as the lude's not TOO high mileage.. whats the odds the previous owner flushed or topped off the coolant right?

you dont buy it sight unseen. if you inspect it and deem it worthy then you take it....if not then you leave it there.

no they are not hard to find. preludes are not rare

Just go to your phone book and lookup local Radiator dealers. Got my OEM replacement from one for ~130 with tax, and been working like a champ.

LOL Maybe he can pick up some oil and tires from there too. LOL

Radiator is one of the parts you NEVER want to compromise. Buy an aftermarket OEM style radiator. They can be had for $125-$150 shipped.

Don't bother trying to fix a radiator, just get a new one. It's not even that expensive. I tried all that miracle cure stuff, including the bottles stuff that's supposed to seal cracks, even including urban myths like putting egg on the crack. All those never worked and just made me feel like a d-bag. Got my paycheck that weekend, went to the local radiator's -r- us and never looked back.
