no oil in motor, car shutted off
so my friend was driving home last night and he didnt noticed that he busted his oil pan so oil was leaking out everywhere. while driving home on the highway, the car shutted off. we are gonna try to replace the pan today, but was wondering what would happened to the bottom end if there was no oil in it.
Let me think about what's gonna have been destroyed by having NO oil...
likely all the bearings, as well as damage to the crank
all the pistons/rings/walls... it'll need a fresh overbore
cams maybe? dunno really
anyway, it isn't really worth rebuilding.

Wow thats almost as bad as the guy that sucked a penny into his intake. Why would you try to start a car with no oil?????

I knew I forgot something
he was just driving home at night and the oil light didnt even turn on at all. it just shutted off and he was wondering what happend and try to crank over the motor, but wouldnt start, so he stepped outside the car and saw the trail of oil.
So his car shut off and that's when he realized something was wrong? He didn't stop to see what was damaged after he hit whatever with the oil pan? They usually don't just fall apart, especially on a brand new motor. I think we are all missing something here.

A car will run for a few mins without any oil/pressure.
When it gets to the point when the car shuts off, you are screwed. If he shut it off himself, there is a chance that it will be ok

Solid answer.
And stop saying shutted please. One would either say turned or shut but not a combination of the two.

running your car with no oil will cause friction between all of your moving parts inside your block and head. so yeah it will wear it out and eventually seize....but this could take a while or it could happen first time your out....but it sounds like that bitch seized if it shut off like that....thats how one of my cars motor locked up. but my hatch was out for like 3 days with no oil...so just dont drive it and replace your oil pan and keep oil in there if it still runs!! lol but that sounds like a nice build...hope everythings ok.
First thing I would do is change the oil pan.
Then dump about 40% Lucas oil stabilizer in just to help out.
Start cranking and praying.
I've ran two vehicles out of oil based on pure stupidity. They were both 70's ford trucks. The 300 inline six ran for about 3 mins without oil. Every start up after was some loud tapping, but it went away as the truck warmed up.
