just installed dc jdm and cat... is it suppose to make a rasy sound??
My Carsound originally sounded fine, but now it's started to rattle inside. I think some of the bricks inside may have broken apart.
i am using a carsound cat...and bolted on to the oem b-pipe
im glad the rattling is heard by other ppl too

and the car sound seemed to be the way to go.... but noise sucks.
Some customers have noticed that a swooshing (raspy??) noise goes away when they get rid of the stock bottleneck.
Try using a straight through test pipe and APEX N1 with the silencer out like my car...
Hooooo weeeeeee is that **** loud. I can deal with it for the power gains though.

I had the sound also. Im glad to see im not the only one. The sound was a little annoying so i got a Spoon N1 to overpower that sound.
and I like it.
and I like it.
I have the DC JDM with the 2.5 SMSP carsound, adapter (removed bottle neck) on Tanabe. I have the rattle as well. Mine does it primarily at around 4000k-4400k RPM, and mostly on deceleration. I think ASSnickle had the same sound at around the same RPM. I checked the heat shields and all were ok, removed the cat and replaced with a test pipe (just for testing) and the noise went away.
MY SMSP cat is a nice piece, with extra spot welds on the heatshields, I'm just affraid there might be a bad batch out there. The 2.25 carsound I had before this one never rattled, my buddies 3.0 doesn't rattle either. Just waiting to hear back from SMSP about what to do if anything.

I have the same "raspy" rattle as you all with my JDM 4-1 + Carsound 94066 bolted up to the stock b-pipe. I am almost POSITIVE it is the heat shield directly above the cat that is making the rattling noise. Well I just installed my header on tuesday so I HOPE to not throw any CEL-67's yet. I am not sure, but I will remove the heat shield later, probably when I install my exhaust. The heat shield looks pretty flimsy
My stock exhuast also rattles between 4 and 4,4k rpm. I have an appt at the dealer for them to take a look on Tues, maybe with some luck they will toss a couple new exhaust peices on there...
my mugen header, carsound cat, and mugen exhaust makes a weird raspy rattling sound (kinda like the new M3's). But I've heard its from the resonating vibration in the headers because of the material they are made of. (they are thinner than normal walls)

It's due to the thin walls as hooptie157 stated.... mine does the same, but with a test pipe. More of a raspy air flow sound than a rattle. I got used to it and I like it... If you hear something "actually" rattling then that's something to worry about.
some interesting info I got from SMSP that was given by a Carsound rep:
"If the engine is not tuned correctly and is running too rich the cat will overheat. When it overheats the body expands and the clearances increase in between the body and the cat/mat material. This mat material tends to be eaten away since some exhaust gases are now going between the body and the cat bricks. Over time it eats the mat away and the bricks become loose and start to rattle then break up."
I should have my JDM DC 4-1 in a couple days - hopefully can get it installed soon...
