Default What does the air flow thru inside the IC core?

Hey guys,

I see a lot of guys who are cutting down bigger IC's from diesels and what not, and making them into smaller ones that will fit on compact cars. I am interested in this, but I need to understand a few concepts first.

I guess to be completely honest, I dont understand how the air flows thru the cooler. I know it goes in one pipe, flows around thru the innards, then comes out the other pipe all nice and cooled. Is there some smaller piping inside the IC that directs the air flow? Then the fins are attached to these and help to disapate the heat? Am I ont he right track?

If I am on the right track there, then how do these guys cut the IC's down? Once they do dont they mess up the smaller piping? Do they have to reroute new piping to make it all work? Any input is appreciated.

If you check the pick of the IC without end tanks you will see that there are channels through the IC....well thats what they look like to me....

so... The air flows thru those channels, and the end tanks keep it from leaking out? so if u cut down a full sized one, and re-welded the bottom, it should still hold the air?

You can cut them between the air channels or lengthwise and they will hold air... you just get to reweld the end tanks either way =P

EX: I can get these IC's from a buddy who works at ford heavy trucks for 230 bux. They are 30x18x2. Where would I cut this one at, inbetween the the solid lines? Like right down the middle of the fins?

you can cut them anywhere between the fins lengthwise, and straight down across the channels to cut the IC to width.

Ahh.. I see. So, after u cut lengthwise, would u have to weld a plate along the bottom of the cut? Or would it hold air without doing such?

hmmm... on that diesel IC above... would you be able to cut in in half lengthwise then line it up and weld the two pieces back together to make it thicker?

thats pretty much what I was thinking of doing, but for the 230 i spend to but this, then the xtra I wouls spend to buy the supplies for the end tanks, I would either just get a spearco core, or get in on the spearco GB thats on here
