Strange POP in the front end.. Can't figure out what it is
Here's what I have:
94 GSR Sedan, 203,xxx on the body
Lowered on Ground control Coil overs, reference pic to see how much, I dunno exactly.

The problem: There is a pop on the drivers side ONLY that seems to be fairly random. In the mornings when I back out, it does it sometimes.. Sometimes it doesn't.
I can stop at a red light and when I take off it'll POP.. more often than not it doesn't.
It seems like whenever the suspension is in a bind, going over a bump or just the ground not being flat, it'll pop. And it's not in succession or anything when it does POP.
Now, I've investigated it some and I found this...

Not too good. I know thats part of my steering. Could THAT be making the noise?
Gimme some idea's of what I need to look for. I haven't had a chance to pull the wheel and look around real good. Hope I described my prob well enough.. I'm not big into suspension stuff.

umm, to me that arm doesn't even look like it's straight out of the rack anymore.
any idea how long it's been like that? I'd suspect that it's time for a replacement rack assembly.
could it create a noise? yep. It should be close to the same noise as when you jack up the car, grab the wheel and wiggle it.

I'm sure it's angled like that because he's got the car on the ground w/ the wheel turned to one side so he could stick the camera up in there and take a pic. Integras lowered even a moderate amount will have the tie rods sitting at an upward angle with respect to the ground.
You might could get away with just replacing the inner and outer tie rods and the boots.
The outer tie rods themselves aren't too bad, but the inner tie rods and the boots are a PITA w/ the rack and engine still in the car. You may end up having to drop the rack, which is a HUGE PITA with the engine still in the car.
<-- just replaced the original rack w/ 250K+ on it a few months ago.

I used to have a similar pop in the front end of my Civic, usually at low speeds, backing out of the driveway and such. When I switched from the GC coilovers to something which was a threaded shock body, the pop went away. Perhaps the springs are moving around on the perches causing the pop, or, the sleeve is rocking on the shock?

I just realized that the pic is of the driver's side and not the passenger side... I thought that the main shaft/piston combo looked like it was drooping compaired to the rack housing.

I'd pull the rack and flush it out anyway, any dirt in there will make the life of the rack drop fast.

Steerings racks aren't that expensive either.. from what I read a pain to remove/install, but at least it would be new.
I"ll update when I remove the tire and get a lil better view of whats happening.

I've had a pop like what you described for over 3 years now. I've replaced virtually everything (most of it incidentally and not a vain attempt to fix the problem). It still persists.
swapped to a manual rack and replaced the rack end bushing
replaced inner and outer tie rods
replaced knuckles/lcas/ucas with integra parts
integra GSR swaybar
urethane end link bushings
replaced bent end link
replaced wheels with 15 inch Rotas
replaced rotors and pads several times over
aligned several times over
swapped in Tokico R coilovers
cut bump stops in half and extended upper shock mounts 1.4 inches
replaced ucas with a camber kit
later swapped back to stock ucas
replaced lower ball joints
motor mount inserts
whiteline caster kit
swapped motor
removed integra GSR swaybar
Never got around to replacing the bushings but they don't look bad enough
My sound is like some smacking the firewall or crossmember with a broomstick. It happens when I back out of my driveway, during hard braking or accelerating, and during a hard shift. It sounds like it's over on the front passenger side. Good luck with yours. I'm selling mine.

its usually just the brake pads shifting in the caliper.

<chuckles> I have to tighten it every now and then. Had to do it about a week ago come to think about it
Didn't get a chance to remove the tire.. I figured theres no point at the moment.
If all goes well, I"m ordering a skunk2 pro series camber kit as well as a new tie rod and boot.
I'm gonna go from there.
I"ll update and let ya'll know whats up and if I can get it fixed

Well, I figured it out.
I"m embarrassed, but nobody else thought of it either, so I take solace in that.....

Loose lug nut
Yeah, I feel stupid. I was going to rotate my tires and do the read camber washer trick. I was making sure I had the right size socket, stuck it on a lug and I turned it by hand
Tightened it and no more pop!
I"m happy it was something simple. Feel kinda STUPID, but live and learn. It's just like anything else.. Obvious things first then get technical.

oh dang man... yeah several times I have driven off after doing work on my car without putting the torque wrench on my lug nuts. Then I hear terrible popping noises and think "oh sh#t!!" then turn around and very carefully drive back to the house.
The day after my wedding, we were driving to Chicago and stopped for a drink several hundred miles from home, when I realized that my front lug nuts were only tightened via my impact wrench on the lowest torque setting from working on it a couple days before. So they weren't really loose and making noise, but they weren't at 80 lb-ft. either.

my crx was poping in the same way your decribing. Turned out the tie rod bushings were shot.
After installing my traction bar it went away. After my tie rod broke on my traction bar I put the stock cross member on and the pop came back. It turned out the rubber bushings on the end of the tie rods were shot. I installed poly bushings and the pop is gone.
good luck

uh, the tie rod is not connected to the front crossmember and does not have a rubber bushing. youre talking about the radius rod.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 90crxdriver »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">my crx was poping in the same way your decribing. haha yeah and 94-01 Integras and 92-up Civics don't even have radius rods.
