Yeah...that's all.

Electrically speaking you couldn't have picked a more difficult swap, unless you already have a VX Civic with the VTEC-E engine. The Y5 is VTEC-E and has numerous differences to the regular engines, even compared to regular VTEC. Plus the OBD2 factor. You can't just toss a P28 or any OBD1 ecu on this motor and have it work properly. EGR, 5-wire wideband O2 sensor, a secondary O2 sensor, crankshaft fluctuation sensor, etc...
I'm just scratching the surface.

The only thing I can think of that would make this easy for you is to set it up not to really function like the stock ecu would do. Use an OBD1 P28 and chip it, have it tuned with VTEC set to come on around 3000 rpms. Use OBD1 intake manifold/sensors/injectors. Replace the guts of the distributor with the ones from your stock dizzy, it works good and you dont have to hack/splice anything. Take out the 5-wire O2 from the Y5 and put a regular 4-wire in. Best guess I have on making this work. Forget entirely about using the harness from the HX.

That makes a big difference going into another VTEC-E car. Still not sure about the ecu situation, the VX has 22hp less than the HX although the engine works on the same priniciples. Converting forward to the Y5 ecu may be a hassle, but running it on the Z1 ecu may lean it out too much. A dilemma indeed!

ok, right now i have a obd1 p28 chipped, i also have a buddy club v tec controller, could i use that? what kind of dizzy should i get? i dont wanna mess with it so id rather by the right one. rewire the o2, and use my obd1 engine harness. this will get the car runnin right.

No, you're going to want to run the stock Y5 ECU. Start with an OBD1 to OBD2 conversion harness. But you're also going to have to add/change wiring for the EGR and O2 sensor, possibly the crank sensor and knock sensor (haven't done this myself). You can use a 92-95 non VTEC distributer (make sure to confirm this because it's been a long time for me, you have to make sure they have the same amount of teeth) or re-pin your distributer plug for an OBD2 distributer harness. There may also be OBD1 to OBD2 distributer adapter harnesses available.

I'm putting an OBD2 3 stage VTEC motor in my VX, but I'm running an AEM EMS so I have a lot of flexibility with what distributer and what sensors I can use.

i took the dizzy apart and put in an obd1 dizzy internals ... so now the dizzy plugs are for obd1, im going to rewire the alternator. as far as plugs go, theres one coming out of the timing belt cover, and the one on the intake manifold. if i use a buddy club controller, will it matter what comp i run?

so you'll have a Y8 head Y5 block and Y8 tranny? That should be fine.

Can't you just use an OBD1 alternator?

obd1 doesnt look for the 5 wire, second o2, egr or any of the stuff so i wouldnt even bother. use the y5 head for the roller rockers and get a nice cam for it. a b7/b8 dist fits on the y5 head and try to use a z6 intake manifold, if thats no available use the stock one from your z1

Y8 and Y5 intake manifolds are the same except the Y5 has EGR.

You can use your old OBD1 alternator and not re-wire anything.

Chipped ECUs are crap.

The P28 would be fine to run the motor with a Y8 head on it. If you still have the Y5 head on it I'd say just chip it with VTEC set around 3000-3500 max and let it ride. Or don't chip it and just use the BC vtec controller to set it. There isn't just one set rpm at which VTEC-E activates, it takes more things into consideration than oil pressure and rpm, like regular VTEC.
Y8 trans is a good idea.

The y5/y8 and z6 maps are different? If he's using a y5 head wont his motor run crappy? Let us know how this goes.
