Default Dad won't let me do my own install???

I would like for some of you to try and help me out here. I have Brembo Blanks, portfield R-4s front pads and OEM rears, with some super blue sitting in my room just waitng to be installed.

After looking at the How To's in here I saw how easy it is to do so me and my friend(who is a mechanic) were all set to do them. Then today my Dad told me out of no where that I am not allowed to install them myself. I told him how easy it is and how I can't mess it up that bad. He then goes on(he knows nothing about cars BTW) and says that if I do them myself no one is allowed to ride in my car untill I get all new brakes and have someone else install them because he thinks I'm going to mess up and kill meself and whoever I am with. I just walked out after that.

Now here is where you guys come in...What should I do? Is there anything I can tell him that will make him into a DIY person? I tried to show him the "how to" but al he said is how do you know that these people(h-t) know what they are talking about. Or should I just tell him if he pays then I have no problem having someone else install them for me? Help...

Sorry for the long post but Honda-Tech has turned me into a DIY person and I refuse to pay for something that I can do

That's too bad. If I were you, I would install them myself anyways. Either that or tell you father to pay for the install...that should change his mind pretty quick

Your Dad tells you not to work on your car?

I can't relate. My Dad makes fun of me if I don't do it myself.

My suggestion is do it yourself at a friends house and tell your Dad you had it done.

Or you can also do it somewhere else, a place that he's not there to see you do it. I doubt he would notice.

You could get a Helms manual. Then just show your dad that you have a proper source of information. Besides brakes aren't hard at all.

Who's car is it? Who payed for it? If both answers are YOU, then tell him there is nothing he can do about it. Otherwise go to someone elses house to install them and say you "had them installed". Little fibs don't hurt anyone.

Who owns the car? If it's your dad then it seems like it's his decision - otherwise have at it. The only thing you can try is to offer up a compomise - parents like that kind of stuff. See if he'll pay for the install or half of it or whatever

Both are me but its in my moms name and her insurance so he can take it away when he wants

Im thinking about the second part and just doing it at my friends house this weekend.

I mean come on...My dad built the tree house I played in when I was a little kid. I didn't fuggin complain about his shotty worksmanship and ask for a contractor and safety inspector to come in before I would play on it. So I think i can handle my own brakes

He just cares a lot about you. My mom almost cried when she saw the ITR for the first time. She said it was WAY to small and I would get killed in it. (They gave me a Full size chevy for it's "tank like" qualities when I was 16). She then told me she would give me money to buy a bigger car like a camaro or benz. I said it was out of the question, the ITR is in my heart. Plus, I didn't want any gifts. I had her drive it and she related. Now she owns it! It's funny how tings flip.

Tell him you'll have them installed at a shop... if he pays for it.

yea he does have a reason though, brakes have to do with safetey, and he wants them to be done right prob cause he loves you and wants nothing bad to happen. I don't think he's insulting your abilities at all....

I would prob end up having the same conversation with my dad, and I'd end up agreeing with him, not to say I don't do anything myself...my cars stripped to metal right now in the garage by myself.

just try looking at it through his eyes, or tell him that he can also be involved with the install and if he feels uncomfortable about a part you'll get it done pro.

What I should have said is the most I could do is warp my rotors or cause uneven wear on the pads

I think I should install them and then give him a receipt and have him pay me

Your mom bought your ITR off of you? So what do you drive now?

Yeah all my mom said about my car when she test drove it was, "It's slow so I know you won't kill yourself" Then I told her to stop shifting at 4k RPMs and she found out what V-TEC was.

Her old (2000) Benz. We did a straight trade! She wanted something with more zip and I wanted something that was practical. I just bought a house too, so things are tight. She bought another Benz for a daily driver and lives in a really nice area.

Like I said, crazy how tings flip. It's all good tho, I can still drive it!

Please do not follow that advice. Anybody telling you to not do what your dad says and then to lie to him is a moron...

Just talk to your dad about it in a reasonable way - and yes, you may have to get somebody to do this install for you. Maybe take some basic automotive classes with your dad... get him involved in your interest in cars. But please do not go behind his back and then lie about it...

Well he allways thinks im a retard who under achevies

But I did take apart one of my BB guns 2 days ago because it was broken and I'm having some trouble getting the thing back together. There are just sooooo many little peices. MUCH harder than doing my own brakes. Maybe if I get that back together then he will let me play with my car.

Oh and the thing about taking classes with my dad. Not going to happen. He is what you call a work-a-holic so there is no time for that...

My dad only gets mad when I work on my car if I leave a mess. An oil stained driveway and tools laying around the garage drive him nuts. I've gotten better with experience though, well usually.
