90 days. if you buy a car within 90 days of its last smog you do not have to smog it again.....................
however they do let it slide if its 91 or 92 days if you flirt with the lady at the computer LOL worked on my accord!

but if you notice the title of the thread. . . he specifcally states cali.
straight from the DMV website

When a car is sold, who is responsible for the inspection?
The seller is required to provide the buyer with a valid smog inspection certification at the time of the sale or transfer. Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.
The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).
Note: Smog certifications are not required for transfers that occur for any motor vehicle that is four or less model years old. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner.

i just bought a car a month and a half ago. ur basically doin just a title transfer. all u do is pay the fees. but here's wat u really have to think about. IS THE CAR STATE REFEREED? if so ur good to go, if not come smog time u mite have to find a "special" smog station. just a heads up from a local resident to cali. and cops dont play. so if u just transfe the title start thinkin about referee if u wana keep everythin legit for cali pigs so they dont mess wit u.
