Possible burning oil??Help
wat can cause oil burn and can it affect how my car performs etc or anything..cause right now my car performs like a champ still. so help. every 2 thousand miles or something i look on my dipstick and my oils all gone while the engine is hot i look....and i usually put a little oil in till my it goes up...possible reasons...ive had bent valves before and ive replaced seals and new valves.
first of all, check the oil while it's cold, not hot. it's gonna be everywhere when it's hot.
if you've recently changed all the seals, then the only thing that i could think that would make you burn that much oil that quickly would be your piston rings. if they are getting bad then lots of oil will be slipping past them and getting burned in combustion. it's normal to have a small amount burned in combustion, but not that much. -- who replaced the valves and seals?

My '98 Prelude is doing the same thing (at 129,000 miles). I run Royal Purple (5w-40 weight) but every fourth tank fillup, the oil is down to the second hole on the dipstick (about a quart low) and Royal Purple is not cheap(!). So far, no one has an explanation. I have a buddy who works for Comp Cams, and even their techs don't know why. Otherwise, the car runs like crazy.
i have an explanation for the first one- when your motor's hot or you just turned it off.. there is a liquid still flowing around in the motor, thats right you guessed it! oil!
so wait until its completely cold (like before you drive) to dipstick it. it should be in acceptable level.
for the 2nd guy-
are you checking at a gas station or something when u JUST turned the motor off? if not, try a higher weight oil.. most people here in the bay area (non freezing) use 10w30 and have had no problems with it.

Hey, thanks man (I'm the second guy). I recently put 10W-30 Royal Purple in the car with a minor change. It'll now go five tank fillups before the oil level is down to the second hole on the dipstick. Odd thing, there is no sign of oil burning (no 'smoke', etc.) so we're still miffed.

Loose rings and high valve seal clearance promotes oil burning. Loose bearings also contribute to burning. High mileage engines burn oil as a general rule.
Now for the part that I have no proof for, other than my experience, dino oil seams to use less oil for the same distance. Then, if you buy a used car with 100,000 miles on it you can almost bet the previous owner used dino oil. High tech synthetics are to help prevent wear...IT'S TOO LATE!
Save your money for a rebuild.

k_lude: if you can't get into VTEC, the first thing to check is your oil level; VTEC is engaged by oil pressure. As mentioned, with the engine cold check your oil level. If it's sitting around the bottom of the dipstick, you can probably put in a full 2 qts. If you still can't get into VTEC, you have bigger problems. BTW, I lose around 1 qt every 1.5 weeks or so; it sucks!
There are a lot of people who will tell you that 'Ludes are oil hogs; I guess some of it is just in the engine design. How many miles and when was the last time you had a tune-up/overhaul? I know I'm losing a lot b/c I've got 138,000+, haven't done my t-belt and use synthetic = massive oil consumption.

From one hole to the other on the dipstic, its only about 1 quart actually I believe. Don't over fill your crank case. That could cause oil pump to cavitate.
