Crank at TDC but flywheel isn't
I've got the timing gear in with the key, so I know it's correctly aligned with the crank. However, when the timing gear is aligned with the oil pump mark, the flywheel white line doesn't line up properly. Bizarre. Any thoughts?
The angle at which you look at the mark on the flywheel is Weird at times ( throught the hole on the block. ) If you can't see the mark at all, then iIde be worried, but if its visible and you set eveything to TDC -- then nothing to worry about.
I'm looking at it with no angle. The mark is almost outside the area of the hole, quite a bit off where it should be. I don't know whether to use the timing gear/oil pump or the flywheel to set the crank to tdc.
there should be two marks on the flywheel, one at TDC and one at 15deg. BTDC. I was just asking a couple of weeks ago what angle to look at the marks when setting ignition timing with a light.

are you sure you have the bottom end at TDC. ive never heard of this before. theres only one way that the flywheel bolts up so that cant be it. i normally stick a couple of extensions into cylinder 1 and put it at TDC that way. what matt said about the white mark maybe right.
if the mark on the crank is lined up, the WHITE mark on the flywheel is closely lined up (depending on your angle) the #1 piston is up all the way, and the "up" marks on the cams are up and the dash marks on the cam are lined up together, then you are for sure at TDC
put the GD motor at TDC and make a new GD mark on the MF flywheel.
~OR~
take your F'N-A to the MF store and get a new aftermarket GD flywheel that had the marks etched in, not manually marked by some Jap who can't see straight.

Go with the mark on the oil pump. The slot for the key on the crank is not gonna change and there is only one way the timming gear goes on. You cant go wrong setting the motor at TDC through the crank. I never even bother to check the flywheel mark. Like others have said thats mainly used for checking your ignition timing.

MF Ban!
Physically check cyl #1 for TDC. Then realign everything else.
