Newbie Engine Quesition - Rattles during acceleration?
During acceleration, ther is a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment during certain parts of the rpm curve. I am asuming that something is rattling when the RPMs hit a certain frequency... Sort of sounds like a tin plate rattling....
Would anyone have any ideas of where to look and see if something is loose? Is there a part that is know to become loose and rattle? If I can take care of this myself I would rather do that than go to a shop...
I have a 97 civic LX... Thanks!!!

I would check the stock exhaust manifold heat shield and the heat shield underneath by the catalytic converter

I have the same problem, tighten it up or take it off.

Welcome... I hope it solves the problem.

If you can't pinpoint the noise to any loose heatshields then I'm going to guess that the ignition or even timing belt timing might be off, and what you're hearing is actually detonation under acceleration.
Do you have the means to have someone check the ignition timing for you?

First I have to check out the heatshields... If I can't pinpoint the problem, then I'll take it to my local shop as that other stuff sounds more complicated than I can handle... I am hoping it is a heatshield as my last ride (chevy S-10) had a similar problem that it rattled at certain rpms.
Oh, another thing... it seems the noise is more pronounced when the car starts driving after a cold start. Then it kinda goes away or is not as pronounced.
