What are the uses and purposes for this approach? I've heard you can penetrate alot of thickness with less amps. Anyone give me some insight?

It's for thick **** and it's not that hard to do. Run your gas flow about 3 times higher than normal and weld away. It's pretty self explanitory.

It's not going to be that useful for most car projects. I've used it on cyl heads before though.

Yeah, I remember RMF talking about it a while back. Gas flow 3 times higher...I dont' think my regulator goes that high...lol. I think he actually spoke specifically about cylinder heads.

So this method is mostly just to obtain penetration and add material, but it's not ideal though in terms of weld cleanliness or? Just trying to determine the down pro's and con's of it.

If you find yourself too pissed off at life to answer though, I understand.

Your material has to be VERY VERY clean.

Like laboratory clean.

But other than that its just like normal welding. Move fast.

Hmmm....sounds interesting. Guess I'll try that out on a junk head just to see what's up with it.

Do you use a green tungsten or a red?

Ive used this technique for welding cyl heads. I like a 3/32" brown tungsten (***** expensive) and I just round the edges of it. As you start to weld it ***** slightly. I keep my gas at 65 and use a gas lens with a #8 cup. Oh and I keep my amps at 100 and only go full throttle at the start to get a puddle started and then I back off to about 2/3 - 3/4 pedal. Remember MOVE FAST!

Man...this sounds exciting....lol. Gonna have to give it a shot, because I have access to heat treating for free.....so if I can get descent I could weld up some chambers

I use red tungsten but other than that it's pretty much as described.

Jesus dude I gave you all the info you needed to know. You arn't a moron when it comes to welding as far as I can tell but you need to relax a little.

Just because I said it was self explanitory doesn't mean I meant it in a condesending way. Run helium 3 times higher than you would argon, weld with dcen as you would anything else on dcen......that's pretty much it man. I'm sorry if the simplicity of my answer confused you.

Only time you'd likely see an argon hydrogen mixture is if you're welding stainless sanitation piping.
