Ground Controls on Koni Yellows
From what i know there are special GC's for koni's. What makes them different? What would happen if you ran normal GC's on Koni's? Any info appreciated
The difference is that they have a machined groove in one end of the sleeve to exactly capture and swallow the spring perch circlip of the KONI. Additionally, the inside diameter of the sleeve needs to be 42mm which is the outside diameter of the KONi shock body.
Do not put a coil-over sleeve of any brand including Ground Control onto a KONI shock unless it #1 had the proper circlip groove and #2 fits the body diameter exactly. Do not put a sleeve system on top of the chrome stock shaped spring perch like you might on other brand shocks that uses a welded on perch instead of the circlip system. Done right, KONIs and proper fitting sleeves work great forever and are extremely strong. Done wrong with the wrong parts match and you take great risks of failure of the perch while driving and your life will suck.

Good info, just wanted to add something.
The photo above shows Ground Control's "new style" Koni sleeve. There is also an older style where the red sleeve has a larger diameter and does not fit the Koni shock like a glove, but there is a black ring at the bottom with a groove to fit the Koni circlip perfectly, and you're supposed to push rubber orings down the sleeve from the top to keep it snug and prevent debris from getting in there.
I ordered a brand new set of GC's for Koni shocks last year directly from Ground Control and got the old style because they were out of the new due to "aluminum shortages becuase of the war" or some BS, FWIW.
I've seen all sorts of coilover sleeves sitting on regular Koni spring perches hold up to track abuse for years, but I wouldn't risk it on my own car. Might as well do it right and not worry.

*Relieved* ...I thought I didn't get the Koni specific sleeve, but I guess I do have it. I have the older version you're speaking of... sleeve + black ring at the bottom.

I hear you.
After finally dropping $380 on NEW Ground Controls because I couldn't find any used, I was furious thinking I'd gotten the wrong set. (I've had lots of problems with GC customer service over other issues..) They explained the new vs old version Koni sleeves. Still wish I had the new ones.. but haven't had any problems with the old style after 10,000miles of highway, dirt road, autox, and track driving.

That surprises me that they're still selling the old set.
I ordered my GC's over 3 years ago and they sent me the "newer" type that fits directly on the Koni snap ring. I thought there was supposed to be an adapter and I recall making a thread here making sure I had all the parts, but indeed I did and it was a great setup (aside from my harsh spring rates that I chose).
