Default Prelude Lifespan

Hey all, I just bought a 2000 Prelude SH, for 14,900CDN (the idiots wanted 19,995 but I got it down to 14,9 after a hard fought battle ) from the dealership. It has 168k on it, I knew I was paying too much for it when I bought it, but everything seems to be in good shape, leather interior is near flawless.

That being said Iwant to know how high mileage some other 5th Gen owners have on there cars. Anyone hit 300k yet?

And did I get raped by the dealership or just minor loss?

Cheers

didn't recently the canadian dollar jump up to the same value as USD 1:1? if so, u bent over and went into a coma in that position. 168k is on the high side espcially for the 2nd to last production year. i saw a 5th gen at 254k MILES, but it had been rebuilt. the best bet would be for you to run a compression test and leakdown too to check for the healthiness of the motor. judging from the 168k, if it doesn't drive too bad and no obvious signs of problems i'd bet it was rebuilt.. after all dealerships generally don't buy lemons.

anywhoo, its too late now to change that... over here in the states, us yanks pay 5-6000$ for that mileage with a clean title. we don't have the heated leather seats or daytime running lights though.

If you haven't already, put away 2-4000$ for the day the motor quits. 2000 if you're handy and can do it yourself, 4000$ if you need a shop. since its from the dealer was there a warranty? welcome to the family.... read the FAQ before you shoot any more Q's.

i believe that is something like $15k us dollar? that seems to be really expensive. Its a honda, it should last for a long time.

yah the canadian dollar jumped over the US recently. What you guys need to understand is population dynamics.

Think of it this way. Canada has roughly 50 million people. California alone has the population of Canada in it. The American population is near 400 million if i am correct. I believe its in that range. The number of cars driven in the US is an extremely high rate in comparison. Alot of cars that are in production in the US are not in Canada. The cars in Canada will hold their value much longer due to the fact that certain cars are rarer than others and not nearly as many were produced. Especially cars that are in great condition.

Take a prelude for example. There are still very few **** box preludes roaming the streets in Canada. Maybe you could spot a handful on a good day (rare) but most of them, if not all are garbage. When you do find a excellent condition one it is going to be holding its value well and increased its value by being one of the very few preludes still in this condition.

If you were to go south of the boarder you would find the US has many many great condition preludes as well as many **** box preludes. This is because they built a number of preludes for the amount of people living in the states. The more people the more preludes being built (demand does play a part as well). In Canada, a smaller population, meaning a smaller market.

Our dollar may be higher now but that does not increase the number of preludes that are actually in a worthy condition of paying good money for.

Personally, to the OP, i feel like you still got owned. You could have got that deal for 10k with less kms. Especially from Edmonton of all places. If you go to the local car forums 780tuners.com you would see a bunch of 5th gens selling for 10-12k in much better condition.

Here is a little lay out of the price range for you guys and what it looks like in Canada

Canadian Price

Third Gen Prelude

Poor $500-2000
Average $2000-3500
Excellent $3500-$5000

Fourth Gen Prelude

Poor $3000-$5000
Average $5000-$9000
Excellent $9000-$14000

Fifth Gen Prelude

Poor $9000-$11000
Average $11000-$13000
Excellent $13000-$22000

These numbers are suprisingly accurate. I have been looking at prelude prices in Canada for years. Don't believe me search yourself. This is why many, many people buy from the US, even more so since our dollar is worth more now. This is why i will be going down to the US to pick up my next 4th gen.

Hope this somehow helps.

Sorry if this is worded poorly, its 2am and i am exhausted.

aww o_o your prelude will be beefier than mine... lol jk sorry to hear =T dang thats a long turn around time but i guess thats not too bad since its gonna be done correctly and you're in canada. (i got the impression there's less shops round there whereas here in cali, i have 4-5 accessible shops for everything not more than an hour away)

hehe u know what i wanna see? THICK sleeves in action, i only saw pics of it but no dyno charts to help since it was never put in. i think the sleeve was 1/4 inch, maybe more.. at least give me a sneak peak on what series/sized turbo lol

Damn I hate to step in here, but it sounds like you really over paid for that car. For 15k you can buy something new. That thing has 168k miles on it, and its a 2000. I have a 92 si with 112k miles on it, and I paid a third of what you paided. The average miles per year is about 10k. Your car has more than double that.

Anyway best of luck to you and your new lude.

Honda are tough machines, especially the preludes. Regardless of if you lost out cash wise, you will get plenty more mileage out of your new baby. My 4th gen has 270000k on the clock and still runs like a dream. Just remember to service her and give her a bit of TLC and you'll be right.
