1st bike RC51...thoughts?
Alright, I'm about to start riding. Got my learners, set up a class for my driving course and about to buy a bike. I was looking for a 600. My buddy found out I was looking for a bike and said he'd sell his RC51 with 6k miles to me for $4k. My thoughts are it's way to big for my first bike and I'm 5'9 165lbs. What are your guys thoughts?
Terrible idea. They're big, they're heavy, hard to maneuver at low speed (which is where new riders are most susceptible to dropping the bike), lots of torque and will spin up the tire on the street... not an easy bike to ride.
Get some experience under you, then get one - they're fantastic machines IF you are ready for it.

I think your friend wants you dead you may want to watch your back.
He should know better than to offer a noob a RC51 as a first bike, its way to much of a bike for a beginner.

Having owned a TL-1000r (also a 400+ pound sportbike , and 1000cc L-twin motor) and ridden RC51's, I would not recommend an RC-51 as your first bike. It is all around more bike than you are ready to ride, no matter what else anybody tells you (or you tell yourself).
first i have to wonder why he's willing to part with it for so cheap.
Beyond that an RC51 is probably one of the worst first bikes on the planet, next to like a 1098 or something. And this is for a couple reasons.
1. It's heavy, meaning at slow speeds it's going to feel more heavy and not inspire a lot of confidence. It's also harder to pick up when you drop it.
2. it is not a street friendly bike. It gets hot easy, has uber tall gearing, and poor fueling if you're not absolutely flogging it. On the freeway my hands would go numb from vibrations
3. it's expensive to fix. When you go down on this bike you're more likely to crack a radiator since they're mounted on the sides and then it starts to get pricey.
4. As is mentioned before, it's powerful. It will amplify any mistakes you make while riding and bring you that much closer to death.
I rode my F4i for a year, which was arguably not a good starter bike either, but even after riding it for that amount of time I still wasn't ready for the RC51 when i got it. It took some getting used to.
I vote no for RC51 as a first bike.

Just about everyone who's responded to this thread owns or owned an RC51. I vote no as well. Just look at the title under my username.
I agree with what every1 said. I started on a RR, rode that thing for 3 years and ditched it for the RC, took me a little while to get use to it. But now that I have I love it !!!!

Thanks for your input guys. I figured it's a terrible first bike but it's always good to get feedback. I'm contemplating on buying it because it's a good deal. He said he was going to sell it for $6k. When he heard that I was looking for a bike, he called me and said he'd hook me up. Hahaha. He called me a ***** a couple times because it was his first bike but I'm no punk bitch. Maybe he does want me dead. lol
