is your fuel pump kicking on? is so, then check to make sure your cap and rotor aren't corroded. a little corrosion won't cause it to not start, but if they look okay, then it may be your ignitor coil going out. make sure you're getting spark by grounding out one of the ends of a plug wire to something non-flamable like the tip of a screwdriver. if you have spark, then you're having a fuel issue. check your ignition components first and see if that's your problem.

well i got it running, i think it was just bad fuel and it wasnt getting it throught the engine properly. i bought the car from an auto auction so i had no previous record of when it was last driven or had gas put in. so i put gas and injector cleaner and now after a couple trys its good. but it still smokes a little when at idle, any reason why this would happen?

since you're not sure how long since it's been started and it may have been sitting for a while, there is probably some build up in the cylinders. get some seafoam and it'll clean it right up. might want to do some minor maintenance as well like a tune up and an oil change. might as well change your coolant and trans fluid while you're at it so you don't have to worry about it.
