new syncros causing grind ?
vvvv update at the bottom of the page vvvv
i just recently had my syncros replaced (just for fun) while i was installing my quaife lsd. before the install the tranny was perfect. now it likes to grind from 2nd to 3rd gear. it almost seems like the location of 3rd gear has shifted. i was told to let the syncros "break in" over time, but i'm sick of waiting. although its getting a bit better. does anybody know anything about this like how long it takes till the syncros are back to normal.
another thing is "driver error", the guy at the tranny shop hinted at it, and I can accept that, i make mistakes. But before I never had any problems with 3rd gear.
so my main question is should i put the old 2-3 syncro back? its in great condition. the shop might give me a break to pull the tranny again, i'm leaning towards this, or should I be more patient?
thanks
edit: the syncros were aftermarket
could that cause this

I had some done before and it took a little bit for them to stop grinding.
Mine stopped after like 400 miles or so

update: so third gear does'nt grind anymore at cruising speed, but if I give it a little throttle to full throttle it still grinds in third.
so I wonder if the quaife lsd is causing this?
the reason i say that is the lsd engauges when given throttle, the gears engauge(lock or whatever), and this seams to coencide with the grinds(only in third)
i'm getting tired of babying third

i have never had new OEM synchro's grind after PROPER installation. i also run a quaife in gsr tranny and never had any issues. if it was assembled dry and did not lubricate the synchro's & other parts before install, it could grind for a couple times before all the parts get proper lube.
did you scuff the gear cone for third? that might have helped with the grind issue. if you open it up again, you should scuff the 2nd - 4th gear cones.

thanks for the replys, i think I may just put the old 2-3rd syncro back since it was in good shape before.
and how would i scuff the syncro, would a tranny shop now about this?

Why are you shifting with the throttle open?

i'm not, i was just describing how it grinds when i'm "getting on it", even just a little bit.

The process actually involves fine grit sand paper or a dremel sanding bit.. you rough up the top part of the gear..
check out this thread for more info.. IT WORKS..

I had bad 3rd and 4th gear syncros in a hydro b16 tranny I ordered new syncros from gearspeed had them installed and the car never grind again...no break in period from my experience
another update: the tranny shop has the tranny apart, and everything looked okay and was installed correctly. so we tried a new syncro/sleeve (probley aftermarket) and it feels and looks the same as the old ones, so he said this might not solve my grinding issue. then he suggested getting a new third gear, thinking there may be play on the sleeve( or where the sleeve goes),btw the teeth on the gear look fine.
anyway my take on fixing this was to install the old syncros (as this all started after installing new syncros and a lsd), cause they are honda parts while the others are aftermarket parts.
what else should I look for that may cause grinding? I just want to make sure I fix this before putting back together.
cliffs: third gear grinds when i get on the throttle (and not when cruising) and the tranny shop cant really see anything obviously wrong.
what should I be looking for?

Missing or disoriented parts or a bent shift fork. You may also want to take a good hard look at your own driver inputs for good measure.
Frankly, if it were me, I would put the old synchro set back in. If they weren't giving you problems to begin with, why change them?
You may want to send a PM to both Mista Bone and Bense to ask their opinions.

if it's Aceomatic/Recon, likely your problem.
I did two group buys thru them YEARS ago, literally wiped out 3 warehouses. Then their next batch came out, junk. I just happen across one of the synchros and it gave me fits on a customers tranny build. It went in the garbage. That headache cost me about 5 hours.....

So I finaly got a new 3rd and 4th gear "honda" syncro/ sleeve set, and it has solved my grinding issue. so in conclusion, stay away from afrtermarket tranny parts.

So I ended up having my tranny pulled once again, and this time I replaced all of the aftermarket syncros with honda syncros from Gearspeed. Plus they carbon coated 3rd through 5th syncros, which feel much better.
Now i can truely say that my tranny is finaly back to normal.
thank you Gearspead
moral of the story: Stay away from aftermarket syncros!
