Tranny is on its way out the door, to be blunt. It will only get worse. This can be delayed/alleviated by changing the fluids out to GM's Synchro mesh trans fluid, it may help out your situation, but in no way does it fully solve it. Your eventually going to have to get a new trans or have your current one rebuilt.

Then why would he get a GSR trans? That would be a technical downgrade from his B16 trans

GSR Granny = Longer Gears
SI Tranny = Shorter Gears
All US ITR Tranny = Shorter Gears with LSD 4.4fd
98+ JDM ITR Tranny = 99 SI 1, 2nd, 3rd, gsr 4th, 5th, 4.7fd

Some say SI trannies are weaker. Not sure. People like GSR cause a lot of people drag race so longer gears = less time waisted shifting. But personally faster you get to red line = better within reason of course ;p Crazy big final drive and you kill your top speed or end up shifting too many times. Really depends on the motor setup though, n/a or turbo and a few other things of how you will use the car.

As far as the actual question, If it's grinding it's usually a syncro. Either get it replaced and might as well check the rest while you have it open and think about going with an lsd or fd. Or just call it a day and get a whole new tranny depending on how lazy you wanna be

GM syncromesh fluid helps is feel a little better till you fix it also

I'm assuming it's not something like you just ran out of tranny fluid somehow and are grinding because it's dry

Depends on how low the fluid is. Different low levels net different results.

Years ago, when i busted my y7, fluids were so low, it sounded like a supercharger whining when i drove it, haha.
