if you've got leaks from your motor, i would suggest the high mileage, it helps recondition the seals and fill in scuffs and minor scratches on cylinder walls to increase compression, and prevent against oil burn off. conventional is just basic, if you really care about your car, you want to use something better. how would you feel if you were your car and you only were given the absoulute basic?? consider full synthetic.
I wouldn't go to synthetic at this point. Stick with a quality conventional 5W-30 either standard or high-mileage formulation (which isn't much more expensive).

Synthetic is not the answer for every application. In his case, he is better off using the conventional or high mileage stuff. Synthetic is for more extreme duty and newer engines.
Does your car smoke/burn any abnormal amounts of oil? If there is no problem then just continue as you have been until things change.

Both a 10W-30 and a 5W-30 will be essentially the same viscosity at operating temperature. Either way, trying to prevent oil consumption by using a heavier oil is generally not a good idea.

does not burn oil whatsover. thanks for the advice everyone-i looked through posts about oil for the difference between conventional and high mileage but couldn't find anything so that's why i started this thread...
so i'm guessing if i start to smell oil or see it burning change to 10w-30?
