Does anyone have the Best Motoring volume with the DC2 ITR's debut? (1995)
Looking for December 1995 volume of Best Motoring
For some reason I started thinking about this the other night and I'm determined now to get it.
So I'm sure most of us have seen the Best Motoring International Vol.1: Type R Legend, and of course it's a great watch and collectible. In the Type R Legend volume, there are video excerpts going back to the 1995 debut of the DC2 ITR, including some footage from the Suzuka factory showing the engine assembly. Those who can go waaay back to early days of Temple of VTEC may recall they had among others a clip of the ITR on a wet Hokkaido circuit, lapping at the hands of Gan-San, with an NSX-R eventually joining in pursuit. That clip and a couple of 0-400 meter drags against the Civic & Integra SiR and S14 Silvia can be found on youtube today.
Well, what I want to get ahold of is the entire first volume the DC2R appeared in. I've got some 90's BM videos on VHS somewhar, but I know I don't have that one from '95. Does anyone have it?

I have it. BM 12/1995.
I bought it in Japan on my 1 st. business trip training and saw the 1st. R at Honda show room in Aoyama.

Wow that's really cool.
It was really the first one produced? I bet you were hoping hard they came to the US. I didn't know about the ITR until early '97, I think.
What format is the video - VHS, VCD? Now that I know it's 1995-12, I can refine my search. If you've seen BMI Type R Legend, can you tell me if there's enough other stuff on the '95 video to make it worthwhile to find?

^^^ I would like to see that as well.

It is only VHS. US's Type-R legend did a good job in transferring over.
It does missed the opening in Tochigi with Gan-san driving in the rain for quick lap.

The best thing would be an English sub or dub of the 1995-12 video, but that was back before BM did that. What I'd really like is an English language book about all the Type-R cars to date, and everything about how and why they came to be. I'd like to know who decided to begin the projects and when, what involvement Shigeru Uehara had, what were the backgrounds of the other key figures (mainly in regards to motorsports), the progression of the research & development, circuit testing, decisions on what to take out, what to change.. at what point were they taken from the assembly line to receive extra attention. Basically, I want to know everything about how the Type-Rs (and the DC2R in particular) came to be.

I've seen the Japanese language BM video "Type-R Returns", 2007-07. If you're interested there's a torrent on mininova. It's pretty funny how they get the point across about how stiff the ride is in the FD2 CTR.. they put three passengers into the car, wearing helmets with shock sensors that trigger a light on top.
They're constantly going off. I want that car here in the States, too.

Thanks for the replies.
I wish it contained more background information. I'll probably still try to get a copy to collect.

just a heads up: In early part of DC2 ITR engine building it was done by hand.......but by the 98 models they had machines doing all the porting/polish because they are better then a human hand could do and more accurate. I understand you are looking for early stuff, but the point of the Legend Vids was to show the progress of the R badge and how Honda was making the car better even the difference between 98-00....
00 has stiffer bushings/cams differ (little 2-3degrees)/interior change and as stated before they started having machines do the engine work do to better quality and closer matching....i am just glad they have a video of this

^Thanks for that. Yeah, the Type-R Legend video touched on eventual use of specially built machines to do the cleanup on the ports near the valve seat. You're right that I'm interested in the inception of the DC2R program, but also anything else during its production run, as well. Really, even up to today's FD2 CTR.
It's just fascinating to me.
I think the 98 spec had a reworked suspenion including stiffer bushings. Keeping up with all the differences between 'specs' and what Japan got versus what North America got can get confusing, aside from the main things. So did the '00 get yet a stiffer bushing? Did that make it over to our '00-'01 cars?

Thanks! I was just roaming in bookstore near my company in Saitama just to pick up latest BM video because I discovered these type of video near my LA office in 1993. Once I saw this 12/95 BM debut ITR with Gan-san, I was in heaven. Like I said before, once I saw the real thing spinning around on the car stand in Honda Showroom in Aoyama and picked up the 96specR brochure, it was my passion to own one. When I got the call from my Acura Dealer in 3/97 of getting USDM, I bought it. Still today, I regret of destroying my RIP 97CW #315 because My fault being AL MIGHTY R. Now I grew up
alot I hope & treasure my existing 00R.

^ Sorry to hear about your '97.
It's great though that you have another R to keep and enjoy.
The first '97 I saw in person is burned into my memory. It's kind of odd that since it left such an impression that I didn't try to get one sooner than I did, but I had a lot of fun with my Civic at the time.
It's cool that you were able to go right to the source upon seeing the ITR in the BM video, on its home soil, back when they were new.

the port finishing was done by machine later on, but i'm sure the engines were still assembled by hand in the later ones, ie, rod bolts being done up with a micrometer (from what i remember)

You are correct, i may have miss typed what i was trying to say.....but i think we got the point.
Stiffer bushings yes.....they made it to the 00 models in Japan..so i would assume that would be for USofA models too.

Actually, I have a dvd copy of the Type R Legend vol. 1, Roaring Vtec and a couple others in english. If anyone has a dvd copier i would be willing to send the original to you, have you make a few copies, then send back my original. Just pay the postage
. I bought these while back at S&K Speed Shop here on long island a few years ago.

I have both VHS and DVD formats. Come to think of it, I thought I saw it at Best Buy the last time I was there.
There was some confusion when talking to someone about this thread last night. To be clear, the video I am looking for is:
December 1995 Best Motoring..... not BMI Vol.1 Type R Legend
My long-winded opening post could have been more clear.
Thanks for the kind offers and information.
