$500 EF
$1000 built sohc (less if you use vitara pistons)
$1500 good turbo kit
$500 electronics/tuning
Get just the 'basics' first, like avoiding Hondata gaskets, ignition systems, cam gear(s), etc

If you have $3500 and not a penny more, I'd suggest you wait longer or find a cheaper hobby. If you do this, but haven't done it multiple times before, you're going to spend a lot more when (not if) you break a part. If every pro racing team used their entire budget on the initial build, they'd be **** out of luck if *anything* happened. Not trying to be a jerk, just realistic. But certainly 12's are attainable with $3500.

yeah...my motor alone costs well over 3500, not including any turbo stuff, car itself, suspension blablablah.

its not cheap. if u can do it for 3500, which is possible, reliability might be questionable. expect something to break, thats just the nature of the beast. have extra money somewhere to fix it, or the car will very quickly become a lawn ornament.

overall, good luck. it is possible, and will feel real good if and when you pull it off

There are plenty of alternative approaches as well. You can find cheap hatches from the 92-95 era pretty commonly anymore. I also come across Bseries motors and trannies cheap just by doing some online searching. If you know what your doing, there's no question it can be done.

maybe you can get really lucky and find one of those D16z6's thats impossible to blow up! lol.... someone once said "trade your soul for an indistructable D series"

haha

anyways i did the $500 ef build... spent about $400 on the turbo kit (all used, all junk yard baby) and about $400 on exhaust and other misc things to complete the build (engine management, wideband...)

so at $1300 i have a turbo d15b2 with fully tuneable standalone ECU. only shitty part is its obd0

with the extra $2200...
B swap or a built D16z6... $700-$1400
OBD1 swap
professional dyno tuning
some slicks and nice weather and your rockin 12's

if your looking to buy the car with the budget you then im honestly going to say no unless you run a 75 shot or bigger and have a decent suspension. i lucked out an got my shell for $50 so the only money i spent was ALL upgrades

I have a straight CRX SI shell sitting in my yard that I WILL GIVE U, so it can be all upgrades from there.

Just think, putting the seatbelts back in will be an upgrade to this car, lol.

U can find chassis's and engines dirt cheap, u just have to be patient. The bests cars to buy are the aborted project cars b/c they usually come with parts and engines.

Is this a serious question ?
Granted I havent run 12's yet. But 13.004.

500 running 90 std.
Gutted without cutting.
d15 stock holset @ 11 psi non intercooled.
arp headstuds 80 bucks.
200 dollar traction bars.
23 inch used slicks for 80 bucks.
5 spd trans 50 bucks.
Chipped ecu 100 bucks. Not tuned.
That gets you 13.004.

A bit over a grand for me so far.

Its fairly easy to go that fast on a budget now a days.

BonerBen went 10.4 @ 142 on about $3500 including the car.

you can run low 11's with a d-series vitara build for cheap, will it last forever, most likely not, its usually a compromise of putting a good amount of timing in the motor to get good power, and the fact that d-series dont tolerate excessive timing specially with vitaras.
