Default ns400r VS vfr400

i am looking at picking up a second bike. Somthing different, somthing fun
Both these bikes seem like they would be a blast to ride.
Has anoyne owned or riden either bike?
How bad is maintance on the NS being thats it;s a 2 stroke? Can i take it onlonger rides? how many miles before it would need a rebuild? How bad do they smoke?

Also open to suggestions on other small dispalcement quick bikes

400's? Rd400, gsxr400, sr400.... Depends on what your cup o tea is. I think a modded SR would be fun. Hold the fancy fairings please.

2 stroke maintaince is as easy as it can get. I can do a complete top end/piston R+R in about 45 minutes. With an adult beverage in one hand. While my two strokes are smaller displacement - i've been on several 7-8 hour rides, pegging the speedo for almost the whole way, with nothing but gas stops.

Yeah 2 stroke maintenance is super simple. I tear down my race bike's topend every 10-12 hours of racing. It can be done in about 30-45 minutes... although my bike has no fairings (dirt-bikes rarely do ) and only one piston.

Default hmmm

Well I don't know much about the smaller displacement VFR's but my '92 VFR750 is amazing. Bought it with 45,000 miles on it and within a few months put another 5, it's really nice. Soo maybe I wasn't much help but I'd say VFR.

OK here is the deal
i sold a truck i built for $5000
I am looking for a small displacemnt bike becuase they are cheap to insure . I also want to do some track days next year, after i take the local track school. So whatever i buy needs too be capable of running around the track.
Keeping with that line, i was thinking maybe i should skip both those and go Supermotard. i can;t think of a cheaper way to go lol Even f you crash it, there is not much to replace compare to either of these bikes, or my Monster.

There is a nice DRZ400 SM with every add on , excel rims, wave rotors, ebtc pads, Pilot tires, cams, intake, Ti exhuast, white plastics, pegs, acropolis head light, bigger tank, ect..... for $4000

there is also a 2001 748R for $6000, but if that goes down, thats not gonna be cheap lol never mind insurance

If you want to go really small and cheap I think Yamaha finally brought over their 250 sumos. The WR X and the XT.

Get the NC30. Good handling, reliable, and fun bike. Go to http://www.400greybike.co.uk/ for anything you want to know about 400cc grey market bikes.

i am leaning towards the NS.
i really want to try a 2 stroke. plus it;s not like it;s going to be a daily bike
My insurance won;t insure an Nc30 but will insure the NS400R for $800/year. Figure that one out

http://www.speedzilla.com/foru...24507
that dude replied to me, and i am REALLY tempted

what should i look out for?

I own a NC-30, it is by far the best handling bike I have ridden. As for a NSR400, I lived in Japan, and never ever saw one, let alone rode one. there are loads of NSR250s and a few NSR500s. All of the 400s will seem under powered to anyone who owned a 90's or newer 600 sportbike. Honda's bikes are usually on the heavy side of things, but usually handle better. The NC-30 isn't comfortable for long trips, I would say two hours max before a dismount. The exhust crosses over the bike under the seat and after 20 minutes, gets very hot. (great for northen states, crappy for sunny states). The seat has a great shape, but is very thin. Corbin will make a seat for you if you send them the old one. I have forgotten the price to do it. These bikes have been getting more and more expensive the past 5 years. I recommend getting a RC-35, VFR400RR, with exception to the carborators, it is a much improved RC-30. Also, depending on your state, most do not allow any 2 strokes to be imported anymore, so if you are planning to regester it, look for a 4 stroke to be safe.

cool thanks for the info
i won;t be doing very many long rides so comfort not too important to me. It;s going to be my second bike, fun bike. So maybe ridden once or twice a week, and then some track days next year
2 stroke is no problem. I can import and register damn near ANYTHING that is over 15 years old.

Where did you get your bike from?

Japan, imported when I moved back to the states. I moved it again, but unluckly it was damaged by the movers...I will see next week if I can have it fixed or not. The sub framed was cracked along with tank, brake lever broken, almost all the plastic on the right side, tail section, and a load of misc. parts. Needless to say, I was not happy with them at all. I will see if I can get another one. My wife wants me to get a harley.
