Default Is it normal for Upper Heat Shield to start rattling?

2000 GS-R
DD (used in winters)

From what I understand (but I'm a nooB), there's an upper and lower heat shield under the car. I was getting some rattling about a year or two ago and my guy went under there, said its the heat shield and took it off (didnt get a new one), and the rattling was gone.

Now I'm getting a similar rattling and I'm wondering if it could be the upper part of the heat shield. Is it normal to start rattling? (my guy said its normal for the lower part to start rattling).

If it is the upper shield, do i need to replace it or just take it off?

Thanks.

he is right. the heat will speed up the rusting process.

well it's just tack-welded on so replacing wont do much...need to weld it better

when i looked at the lower shield after they took it off, it looked like it was b/c the points that hold the bolts on were rusted away, which is why it started rattling. if there was a new one, it seems like it would last a couple years (like when you buy your car new).

has anyone experienced rusted bolts w/o the shield?

i'm upgrading my exhaust i'm going to try a magnaflow high flow cat. I don't think cutting something off is necessairly a "fix". Also i saw a type R cat on H motors for like 100$, that might be something to look into.

The heat is not that big of a deal its a honda it will rust. If its making noise and ripping it off does'nt make the exhast leak go for it. its alot cheaper that way
