Default EF sedan 1.5 Liter engine DPFI intake throat plate?

I popped open my throttle body cover on my D15 engine on my 91 sedan and noticed that the throttle plate that is attached to the cable is hiding underneath a plate that appears to be vacuum actuated. The plate looks identical to a throttle plate and it is the first plate you see when you look into the intake throat. It can be moved if I push it and appears to be actuated via vacuum. The thing is when I start my car the upper plate doesn't move out of the way and obviously I can't see it move when I'm driving b/c well... its impossible to see while driving!

Does this plate actually move? If it doesn't then I can see why my car has so little power b/c its like sucking air through a tiny hole that is cut out in the bottom half of the plate.

Can someone explain to me how this plate works?

Thanks

The main reason your car has so little power is the fact that it's a DPFI engine in general.

you could always just take the plate out... i did that to a friends car for sng's and it did make a little difference but remember that you are still driving around a dpfi 1.5L

no CEL. I did it on my STD years ago.. and made a ghetto intake by removing the bottom half of the air box.. lol

the things you do when you're broke

I just did this mod to my four door (mod, lol) and I have to say WOW not only does the intake scream like an mpfi engine but I noticed a huge difference. At least 5-10 hp. And I have a 70 hp std. Motor. Crazy

I don't think i t opens. Before I took mine out I revved it and watched it and it did nothing. But mine wouldn't even open when I pressed on it so out it came. It really opened up my powerband. What little power it has lol

if you have it wired up correctly and have no vaccum leaks it should open around 3250rpm (i eyeballed it) and it its not wired up correctly its going to open at WOT (if you dont have any vacuum leaks

i kinda like it because i get good torque down low unlike my del sol i used to have with a d16z6

How could it be wired incorrectly? Its stock on all the motors. Maybe I didn't rev mine high enough. But mine physically wouldn't even open if I tried to force it with my hand

wow ,, everytime isee a thread like this i want to punch a baby.

dont touch anything in the dpfi manifold.. the reason the car is slow is because the engine / intake suck ***. honda put those plates in there for a reason.dont take them out plus you risk dropping a small screw into your intake. do your self a favour and at least get an mpfi swap. and to these people saying it adds 5-10 hp are bullshitting you cuz it doesnt. theres no way it can. the noise makes them think its faster whe it really isnt.

Lol excuse me but any simpleton can use a magnetic screwdriver. And its not the sound that made me think it added power it was the fact that it actually made power past 4000 lol. My car used to hit a wall in the power band but now it keeps going all the way to 6500(not revving a d15 past there lol). Its all for fun. Nobody actually thinks they're fast after they do this mod. And who would waste money on an si mani when you can swap a motor lol

some people cant affored to buy an engine like me a wile ago.. so i put the si manifold on for future engine swaps so that would be one thing out of the way. drove the engine till it blew up (about 2 years later by the way) and then swapped in a new engine. either way theres still no point in taking the plate out i bet your milage is shot to hell now. even if your using a magnetic screw driver the tiny screw can still fall off of it. still not worth the risk in my eyes..

Good point I do have a si mani and ls ecu just laying around and I do have a gsr too but I might not keep the car. My mileage is still good as long as I don't floor it all the time. Which I do lol. If anyone wants to buy the mani and ecu I'll sell them for $100 shipped. The mani is complete too

Hey I have a 1.5 dpfi all stock that has plenty of power. It really suprises me on the kick this little motor has.If everything is hooked up right it should be the same.

w0rd.

same reason the dpfi d15b2 in my beater will likely have an A6 cam and y8 headgasket for next spring.

I can't leave anythin stock, no matter how useless the modification may seem.

EDIT: b/c malgerus edited his post, my post really doesnt fit in the thread anymore..... oh well.

I believe it's for when the engine is cold, it restricts the amount of air when the idle is high or something like that. I took it out too, and also took off the whole DPFI round box assembly and put a 90 degree ABS pipe and attached the intake to that instead...... yes, it does suck to be broke..

any ill effects in the low rpm throttle response? i wondered about removing that box, but it really is the closest thing the dpfi motor gets to an intake plenum, so I left it be.
