Default hypothetical question about weight reduction....

I know this is a hypothetical question but I have been thinking about it for a while.

How much weight can you take off of the S and still be a streetable car? Example, like the seats the A/C the power stearing etc. etc.. Reason I am asking is, my car will be paid off in the near future and I kinda want to make it a weekend warrior. But I don't want to drop 6-10 grand on a S/C or turbo kit just to have fun on the weekends. (I really do but I am about to start a family)lol

And this got me thinking if I could maybe somehow get about 400-500 lbs off the S and then squeeze about 230-250whp out of it.. With I/E and AEM and a good tune from Tony1. That would be a lot of fun at the track and cruising around town. (I am dying to try auto-x) So what do you guys think? Am I crazy for thinking 4-500 lbs? Or is it possible? TIA

Just an FYI. My S is a AP1.

dude our power steering is electrical so it wouldnt be a good idea to take it out unless you get a custom made rack thats is fully manual. While your at it you might as well get rid off the abs too. BTW anything is possible

I don't think 400-500lbs is possible. And to make it that light, you're better off just getting a supercharger or a turbo setup.

Things to do to reduce weight:

Get a hardtop & remove the soft top along with the motors & the brackets (you may gain a little weight, but you can always take the hardtop off at the track; instant gratification in weight savings when you do so around 60lbs).

Change your hood/fenders/doors/trunk to real (not vis/seibon stuff) CF

Take out one passenger seat & remove all panels in the interior. Change to a bucket seat (around 8-10lbs).

Remove spare tire/tools/panels

Get lighter wheels (unsprung weight)

Get a lighter exhaust

Change the sidemirrors out (there is a set out there that mounts to the rubber triangles, I believe that both mirror weigh around 5 lbs, replacing these with lighter ones may save you 3-4lbs)

You can probably get close to 100lbs or a tad more with all of this.

400-500 lbs is possible but you are talking lots of $$$ and a strict track only car

word^^^

CF fenders, CF doors, dash gone, center console gone, no carpet, custom roll bar and removal of stock system, no headlights or tail lights, no cruise control, race battery, etc.

Basically it would not be streetable.

I think you could strip about 200-300lbs from the car without spending much money. As for driving that on the street, it would be a pretty hardcore ride.

Go to the track first. You'll come to find that many bone stock S2000's are doing plenty well and having plenty of fun.

If you want to go fast..... tires are one of the most important things. Weight reduction is at the bottom of the list although it is definitely beneficial.

weight reduction isnt cheap..

plexiglass the hardtop, light wheels, calipers
remove misc. nuts, bolts, stereo etc... you will get about 100-200 and thats pushing it....

Then tell your sister to quit hitchhiking.....

Thanks for all the replies guys. I wasn't sure about how much weight I could strip out of the car. I am just gonna save up and start piecing together a turbo kit. Thanks again for all the replies.

I was looking at something similar myself but not too drastic - was thinking about taking out the spare wheels and tools as part of it, and replacing it with one of those foam aerosol repair type kits. How much weight would that save? are the repair kits any good? Answers on a postcard please...

Flat tire repair kits work to an extent. However, heard they put a nasty residue on the wheels.

If you have AAA you're good to go. Getting a flat tire in the rear is a pain in the *** anyways since you have to swap the fronts to the rear and the rears to the front and put the spare in the front.
